Histological and ultrastructural studies of oogenesis in the sea-urchin Paracentrotus lividus.

Changes in the fine structure of growing female germ cells of Paracentrotus lividus and the sequence of their stages were examined by the light and the electron microscope. The investigation showed that, in the previtellogenic stage, the cytoplasm contained numerous vacuoles and few yolk granules. In the vitellogenic stage, the number of yolk granules increased and, as the oocytes attained maturity, the cytoplasms became packed with yolk.

Retroperitoneal block dissection in the treatment of nonseminomatous tumors of the testis.

Fifteen patients with nonseminomatous tumors of the testis, stages I and II, underwent a retroperitoneal block dissection as part of their treatment regimen. Nonseminomatous germ cell and paratesticular tumours were reported. The preoperative measures and operative technique of the anterior transabdominal approach are described.

Fibrous histiocytoma: benign and malignant variants.

Twenty cases of benign and malignant fibrous histiocytoma are presented. Six were benign, 11 malignant fibrous, and 3 pure malignant histiocytomas. These tumours arise from tissue histiocytes and have a wide range of histological appearances.

Testicular tumors in undescended testes.

Twelve cases of malignant tumors in undescended testes were studied. Early diagnosis of these tumors was usually difficult as the testes were intrabdominal and the symptoms vague. Sixty percent of the seminoma cases were of the anaplastic aggressive variant.

Preliminary investigation of bilharzial patients for the presence of Australia antigen using latex agglutination test.

THE AUSTRALIA antigen was studied by the use of a reversed passive latex agglutination test in the sera of 250 cases, mostly bilharzial. The results were analysed in relation to age, clinical presentation, bilharzial infestation, antibilharzial treatment, jaundice and serum bilirubin. It was found that, the test was significantly more positive in hepatosplenic cases, in those with past history of bilharziasis, in those with jaundice and in those with higher serum bilirubin level.
