Aims: Trait impulsivity and trait rumination appear to uniquely contribute to problem gambling. However, only a limited number of studies have investigated their relationship with each other, and no study has tested whether their interplay could explain problem gambling. In this study, we aimed to examine these associations, especially focusing on the putative moderator role of gender.

Background: Several studies have explored the relationship between personality and work addiction, suggesting that individuals with certain mental disorders, including personality disorders such as obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), may be more prone to work addiction. However, the characterization of personality organization (PO) among workaholics and its contribution to the persistence of work addiction remains unclear.

Methods: In this longitudinal study of a representative sample of young adults (N = 1748), we applied the Bergen Work Addiction Scale and the Inventory of Personality Organization.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) is a common reason for emergency department visits, which can range from mild to severe cases that require hospitalization.
  • An 84-year-old man with existing health issues experienced lower GIB, and initially, a colonoscopy found a mass but no bleeding.
  • Further testing suggested the mass might be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, but follow-up exams revealed it was actually a hematoma that had resolved without signs of cancer.

The present study was aimed at obtaining a more comprehensive understanding of the possible mediating factors in the morningness-eveningness alcohol consumption relation. We explored the role of mediators such as sensation seeking, the frequency of going out in the evenings, and drinking motives. We tested the proposed mediation model via structural equation modeling based on cross-sectional research conducted among Hungarian adolescents and young adults ( = 1695, 42.

Epidemiological and phenomenological studies suggest shared underpinnings between multiple addictive behaviors. The present genetic association study was conducted as part of the Psychological and Genetic Factors of Addictions study ( = 3003) and aimed to investigate genetic overlaps between different substance use, addictive, and other compulsive behaviors. Association analyses targeted 32 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, potentially addictive substances (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other drugs), and potentially addictive or compulsive behaviors (internet use, gaming, social networking site use, gambling, exercise, hair-pulling, and eating).

Background And Aims: Changes in the nomenclature of addictions suggest a significant shift in the conceptualization of addictions, where non-substance related behaviors can also be classified as addictions. A large amount of data provides empirical evidence that there are overlaps of different types of addictive behaviors in etiology, phenomenology, and in the underlying psychological and biological mechanisms. Our aim was to investigate the co-occurrences of a wide range of substance use and behavioral addictions.

Objectives: Most of the addiction studies focus on very specific aspects of addictions, often with contradictory results, and integrated studies are quite rare. Experimental studies comparing underlying mechanisms of addictions and analyzing data from an integrative psychological and genetic perspective are almost nonexistent. The aim of the present paper is to describe the research protocol of the Psychological and Genetic Factors of Addictive Behaviors (PGA) study, which applies an integrative approach to understanding the acquisition, development, and maintenance of addictive behaviors.

Article Synopsis
  • - Due to measurement challenges and a lack of representative data, the prevalence of compulsive buying behavior (CBB) is not well understood, prompting the validation of three assessment tools: ECBS, QABB, and RCBS.
  • - A study utilized two samples—one representative of the Hungarian population and the other from shopping malls—to test these instruments, resulting in a revised ECBS (ECBS-R) and cut-off scores for each measure.
  • - Findings revealed CBB prevalence rates of 1.85% in the general population, but much higher in shopping mall customers (up to 13.3%), indicating that each measurement tool targets different groups within the CBB spectrum.

The management of atrial fibrillation (AF) following stem cell transplant (SCTX) is often challenging because of the universal presence of profound bone marrow suppression. The incidence of and risk factors for AF/flutter following SCTX are not well known. A total of 395 multiple myeloma (MM) patients consecutively underwent SCTX between 2002 and 2005 at the Mayo Clinic, and 383 of whom, mean age 57 +/- 9 years, had no history of evidence of AF/flutter constituted the study population.

Mutations in adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) underlie the earliest stages of colorectal carcinogenesis. Consequences of APC mutation include stabilization of beta-catenin, dysregulation of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, and loss of retinoic acid production, events with poorly defined interactions. Here we showed that treatment of zebrafish expressing a truncated form of Apc with either retinoic acid or a selective COX-2 inhibitor decreased beta-catenin protein levels and downstream signaling events.

The temporal association between loss of function of the tumor suppressor adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) and overexpression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) has been demonstrated in vivo and has led to the hypothesis that APC regulates COX-2 expression. This could potentially occur through a variety of mechanisms including the well-characterized ability of APC to negatively regulate Wnt signaling and decrease expression of target genes. However, recent findings suggest that the products of COX-2 elicit effects that occur upstream of the beta-catenin/TCF/LEF pathway.

Mutations in the human adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene are thought to initiate colorectal tumorigenesis. The tumor suppressor function of APC is attributed primarily to its ability to regulate the WNT pathway by targeting the destruction of beta-catenin. We report here a novel role for APC in regulating degradation of the transcriptional co-repressor C-terminal-binding protein-1 (CtBP1) through a proteasome-dependent process.

Mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumor suppressor gene seem to underlie the initiation of many colorectal carcinomas. Loss of APC function results in accumulation of beta-catenin and activation of beta-catenin/TCF-dependent transcription. Recent studies have implicated APC in controlling retinoic acid biosynthesis during normal intestinal development through a WNT-independent mechanism.

Mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene result in uncontrolled proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells and are associated with the earliest stages of colorectal carcinogenesis. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is elevated in human colorectal cancers and plays an important role in colorectal tumorigenesis; however, the mechanisms by which APC mutations result in increased COX-2 expression remain unclear. We utilized APC mutant zebrafish and human cancer cells to investigate how APC modulates COX-2 expression.
