People seeking asylum and refugees living in initial accommodation in the UK can experience significant barriers to accessing care. They often have complex health and social needs and may experience fragmentation in the delivery of services. The Respond Integrated Refugee Health Service, hosted by University College London Hospital and operating across North Central London, has been created to address some of these challenges.

Aims: This work examines and describes dental health among people seeking asylum and refugees (PSAR) who are evaluated by the Respond service. This includes access to and use of oral health products, access to dental care, and experience of dental pain.

Materials And Methods: The Respond service pilot offered holistic health assessments to PSAR in temporary accommodation within North Central London between July 2021 and March 2023.

Structure-switching aptamers have become ubiquitous in several applications, notably in analytical devices such as biosensors, due to their ease of supporting strong signaling. Aside from their ability to bind specifically with their respective target, this class of aptamers also undergoes a conformational rearrangement upon target recognition. While several well-studied and early-developed aptamers (e.

Objective: This study investigated the association of perceived neighborhood qualities with likelihood of transit walking, leisure walking, neighborhood walking, and meeting physical activity (PA) recommendations among US adults with arthritis.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used 2020 National Health Interview Survey data. Included participants were adults who reported with clinician-diagnosed arthritis and who reported the ability to walk.

Parasitic infections and the medications used to treat them may be unfamiliar to many paediatricians. Parasitic infections, however, are not uncommonly seen in children in the UK. We summarise infections which are commonly seen, currently recommended treatment and practical guidance on formulations, adverse effects and treatment choice.

Introduction: Everyday pains are experienced frequently by young children. Parent responses shape how young children learn about and experience pain. However, research on everyday pains in toddlers and preschoolers is scarce, and no self-report measures of parent responses to their child's pain exist for this age group.

Objective: To determine the association between disease activity and choroidal thickness in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Methods: We conducted a cohort study of 24 SLE patients and 13 healthy controls recruited at Washington University School of Medicine between June 2019 and November 2021. SLE disease activity was assessed using the SLE Disease Activity Index-2000 Responder Index-50 (S2K RI-50).

Background: Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are at increased risk of infections and experience barriers to healthcare access. There is a lack of evidence to underpin existing national and international guidance regarding asymptomatic infection screening in this population. We describe the results from routine infection screening of 1104 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children attending for testing at 3 London centers.

Congenital syphilis is a major global cause of fetal loss, stillbirth, neonatal death, and congenital infection. In 2020, the global rate of congenital syphilis was 425 cases per 100 000 livebirths-substantially higher than WHO's elimination target of 50 cases per 100 000 livebirths. Case rates are rising in many high-income countries, but remain low compared with those in low-income and middle-income settings.

Chronic wounds affect millions of people worldwide every year. An adequate assessment of a wound's prognosis is critical to wound care, guiding clinical decision making by helping clinicians understand wound healing status, severity, triaging and determining the efficacy of a treatment regimen. The current standard of care involves using wound assessment tools, such as Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) and Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool (BWAT), to determine wound prognosis.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection represents a significant global health threat, accounting for 300 million chronic infections and up to 1 million deaths each year. HBV disproportionately affects people who are under-served by health systems due to social exclusion, and can further amplify inequities through its impact on physical and mental health, relationship with stigma and discrimination, and economic costs. The 'inclusion health' agenda focuses on excluded and vulnerable populations, who often experience barriers to accessing healthcare, and are under-represented by research, resources, interventions, advocacy, and policy.

In 2020, 21% of people who sought asylum in the UK were children. This population has complex interconnecting health and social needs. Assessment requires a holistic approach, with consideration of physical and mental health in addition to social and developmental well-being, within the whole family group.

The workforce shortage of musculoskeletal and rheumatic disease (MSK-RMD) trained providers has led to the need for additional education for nurse practitioners (NPs) in MSK-RMD. An educational certificate was developed and implemented collaboratively between an academic medical center and a college of nursing. The NP-focused MSK-RMD education program enhanced the assessment and treatment of a variety of common RSK-RMD conditions.

Background: Evidence on the potential oral health effects of vaping is scarce and there are limited data on possible links to both caries and periodontal disease. The authors assessed the association between electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or vape use and caries risk level. The Caries Management by Risk Assessment tool was used.

Background: Comorbid diseases influence patient outcomes, yet little is known about how comorbidities interact with treatments for metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). No head-to-head trials have compared the efficacy of abiraterone and enzalutamide - oral androgen-receptor targeted agents (ARTAs) for mCRPC. In patients with comorbid disease, outcomes with ARTAs may differ due to disparate mechanisms of action, adverse events, and drug interactions.

Article Synopsis
  • - Current guidelines recommend all children with HIV-1 infection receive antiretroviral therapy (ART) to enhance health outcomes, yet prior treatments were not timely for everyone, leaving gaps in immune response understanding.
  • - A study analyzed 11 adolescents with HIV-1 on ART, comparing those with well-controlled viral loads and CD4 counts to those with poor control, focusing on T cell receptor (TCR) diversity and output from the thymus.
  • - Findings show that adolescents with effective HIV-1 suppression had higher TCR diversity and CD4 counts, suggesting robust immune responses, while those with poor suppression had diminished thymic output and TCR diversity, highlighting the importance of prompt and effective ART.

Asylum-seekers and refugees have an increased burden of infections compared with the general population. This has been widely recognised by countries welcoming those fleeing conflict and persecution; however, there are no screening standardised guidelines and regulatory processes. Identification of certain neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and other infections is important for the health and well-being of the individual in addition to public health and biosecurity.

Histamine receptor 2 (HR) activation in the stomach results in gastric acid secretion, and HR blockers are used for the treatment of peptidic ulcers and acid reflux. Over-the-counter HR blockers carry a five-membered aromatic heterocycle, with two of them additionally carrying a tertiary amine that decomposes to N-nitrosodimethylamine, a human carcinogen. To discover a novel HR blocker scaffold to serve in the development of next-generation HR blockers, we developed an HR-based sensor in yeast by linking human HR activation to cell luminescence.

Unaccompanied children (also called unaccompanied minors) are children who have been separated from both parents and other relatives and are not being cared for by an adult who, by law or custom, is responsible for doing so. From 2010 to 2020, unaccompanied minors accounted on average for 15.4% of the total number of first-time asylum applicants aged less than 18 years in the UK.
