The synthesis and structural X-ray diffraction studies for some benzamidinate ligations and several group 4 benzamidinate complexes are presented. The use of the cis-octahedral C(2)-symmetry compounds was studied to shed light on the conceptual applicability of these complexes as potential catalysts for the stereoregular polymerization of propylene. We demonstrate that the stereoregular polymerization of propylene catalyzed by early-transition metal octahedral benzamidinate complexes, activated with either MAO or B(C(6)F(5))(3) as cocatalysts, can be modulated by pressure (from atactic to isotactic through elastomers).

The three ancillary amido moieties in the cationic complex [(Et2N)3U][BPh4] are highly reactive and are easily replaced when the complex is treated with primary amines. The reaction of [(Et2N)3U][BPh4] with excess tBuNH2 allows the formation of the cationic complex [(tBuNH2)3(tBuNH)3U][BPh4]. X-ray diffraction studies on the complex indicate that three amido and three amine ligands are arranged around the cationic metal center in a slightly distorted octahedral mer geometry.

The present study was designed to assess children's memory and suggestibility in the context of ongoing child maltreatment investigations. One hundred eighty-nine 3-17-year-olds involved in evaluations of alleged maltreatment were interviewed with specific and misleading questions about an anogenital examination and clinical assessment. For the anogenital examination, children's stress arousal was indexed both behaviorally and physiologically.

Objective: The goal of the present study was to investigate the consistency of children's reports of sexual and physical abuse.

Method: A group of 222 children, ages 3-16 years, participated. As part of legal investigations, the children were interviewed twice about their alleged experiences of abuse.

Background: Organisms simplify the orchestration of gene expression by coregulating genes whose products function together in the cell. Many proteins serve different roles depending on the demands of the organism, and therefore the corresponding genes are often coexpressed with different groups of genes under different situations. This poses a challenge in analyzing whole-genome expression data, because many genes will be similarly expressed to multiple, distinct groups of genes.

Motivation: Many methods have been described to identify regulatory motifs in the transcription control regions of genes that exhibit similar patterns of gene expression across a variety of experimental conditions. Here we focus on a single experimental condition, and utilize gene expression data to identify sequence motifs associated with genes that are activated under this experimental condition. We use a linear model with two-way interactions to model gene expression as a function of sequence features (words) present in presumptive transcription control regions.

Thirty-four schools (n=7426 consented sixth graders, 71% of the eligible population) were randomized to conditions to test the hypothesis that "Skills for Adolescence" (SFA) is more effective than standard care in deterring and delaying substance use through middle school. One-year posttest data were collected from 6239 seventh graders (84% of those eligible). Initiation of "ever" and "recent" use of five substances for baseline nonusers and changes in recent use for baseline users by experimental condition were compared using mixed model regression to control for school clustering.

Medical difficulties related to otolaryngology that occurred during the Lewis & Clark Expedition (1803-1806) are highlighted. These difficulties included ear and face frostbite, upper respiratory infections, temporal vessel laceration from an air gun accident, neck scrofula, and a pediatric neck mass. The custom of Clatsop Indian head flattening is also described.

A major challenge in interpreting genome sequences is understanding how the genome encodes the information that specifies when and where a gene will be expressed. The first step in this process is the identification of regions of the genome that contain regulatory information. In higher eukaryotes, this cis-regulatory information is organized into modular units [cis-regulatory modules (CRMs)] of a few hundred base pairs.

The purpose of this study was to classify breast carcinomas based on variations in gene expression patterns derived from cDNA microarrays and to correlate tumor characteristics to clinical outcome. A total of 85 cDNA microarray experiments representing 78 cancers, three fibroadenomas, and four normal breast tissues were analyzed by hierarchical clustering. As reported previously, the cancers could be classified into a basal epithelial-like group, an ERBB2-overexpressing group and a normal breast-like group based on variations in gene expression.

The combination of genome-wide expression patterns and full genome sequences offers a great opportunity to further our understanding of the mechanisms and logic of transcriptional regulation. Many methods have been described that identify sequence motifs enriched in transcription control regions of genes that share similar gene expression patterns. Here we present an alternative approach that evaluates the transcriptional information contained by specific sequence motifs by computing for each motif the mean expression profile of all genes that contain the motif in their transcription control regions.

To assess the consequences of oxidative stress in allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, we compared the iron level, unsaturated iron-binding capacity, total iron binding capacity, the percentage saturation of iron-binding capacity, the amount of diene conjugates as well as the amounts of total glutathione, reduced glutathione, oxidized glutathione, and the oxidized glutathione/reduced glutathione ratio in skin homogenate from lesional and nonlesional skin. Lesional skin samples were obtained from positive patch test sites to 5% NiSO4 in five subjects, and from chronic contact dermatitis lesions on the hands, which had exacerbated over 3--9 wk in six subjects. Contact dermatitis caused at least a 4-fold increase in the iron level in the lesional skin area compared with the nonlesional skin area (p < 0.

We have systematically characterized gene expression patterns in 49 adult and embryonic mouse tissues by using cDNA microarrays with 18,816 mouse cDNAs. Cluster analysis defined sets of genes that were expressed ubiquitously or in similar groups of tissues such as digestive organs and muscle. Clustering of expression profiles was observed in embryonic brain, postnatal cerebellum, and adult olfactory bulb, reflecting similarities in neurogenesis and remodeling.

Background: Large gene expression studies, such as those conducted using DNA arrays, often provide millions of different pieces of data. To address the problem of analyzing such data, we describe a statistical method, which we have called 'gene shaving'. The method identifies subsets of genes with coherent expression patterns and large variation across conditions.

We explored genomic expression patterns in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae responding to diverse environmental transitions. DNA microarrays were used to measure changes in transcript levels over time for almost every yeast gene, as cells responded to temperature shocks, hydrogen peroxide, the superoxide-generating drug menadione, the sulfhydryl-oxidizing agent diamide, the disulfide-reducing agent dithiothreitol, hyper- and hypo-osmotic shock, amino acid starvation, nitrogen source depletion, and progression into stationary phase. A large set of genes (approximately 900) showed a similar drastic response to almost all of these environmental changes.

Purpose: To assess the morbidity of mandibulotomy in patients treated for neoplasms of the oropharynx and oral cavity, and to determine if postoperative radiation therapy to the mandibulotomy site carries an increased risk of complications.

Patients And Methods: The medical charts of 30 patients treated between 1992 and 1996 undergoing midline mandibulotomy for tumors of the oral cavity (7 patients) and oropharynx (23 patients) were retrospectively reviewed. Three patients presented with recurrent disease, 1 of whom was previously irradiated.

Human breast tumours are diverse in their natural history and in their responsiveness to treatments. Variation in transcriptional programs accounts for much of the biological diversity of human cells and tumours. In each cell, signal transduction and regulatory systems transduce information from the cell's identity to its environmental status, thereby controlling the level of expression of every gene in the genome.

B cell diffuse large cell lymphoma (B-DLCL) is a heterogeneous group of tumors, based on significant variations in morphology, clinical presentation, and response to treatment. Gene expression profiling has revealed two distinct tumor subtypes of B-DLCL: germinal center B cell-like DLCL and activated B cell-like DLCL. In a separate study, we determined that B-DLCL can also be subdivided into two groups based on the presence or absence of ongoing Ig gene hypermutation.
