The extent and effect of disease interaction and pathogen exchange between wild and farmed fish populations is an ongoing debate and an area of research that is difficult to explore. The objective of this study was to investigate pathogen transmission between farmed and wild Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) populations in Norway by means of molecular epidemiology.

While HSMI is a common and commercially important disease in farmed Atlantic salmon, the presence of PRV has so far not been associated with HSMI related lesions in wild salmon.

In 2010 a double-stranded RNA virus of the Totiviridae family, provisionally named piscine myocarditis virus (PMCV), was described as the causative agent of CMS.

Knowledge of its basic biological processes such as reproduction is crucial for the control of this parasite and can facilitate development of a vaccine. Here, a novel yolk-associated protein, LsYAP, was characterised.

This study focussed on identifying the function of the largest protein encoded by ISAV genomic segment 7 (7i), which like influenza A segment 7 encodes two proteins, one of which is based on removal of an intron from the primary transcript. Using two independent methods, an Mx1 promoter-driven reporter system and real-time PCR of FACS-sorted transfected cells, we demonstrate that the non-structural ISAV 7i protein is an interferon-signalling antagonist.

This study presents the characterization of the ISAV 50-kDa glycoprotein encoded by segment 5, here termed the viral membrane fusion protein (F).

In addition to salmon and trout, commercial vaccines are available for channel catfish, European seabass and seabream, Japanese amberjack and yellowtail, tilapia and Atlantic cod. In general, empirically developed vaccines based on inactivated bacterial pathogens have proven to be very efficacious in fish.

This study presents the expression and functional analysis of the ISAV genome segment 3, and provides further evidence that it encodes the viral nucleoprotein (NP). The encoded protein was expressed in a baculovirus system, and Western blot analysis showed that it corresponds to the 66-71 kDa structural protein previously found in purified ISAV preparations.

A recombinant protein vaccine and a DNA vaccine were produced, based on the same capsid-encoding region of the Atlantic halibut nodavirus (AHNV) genome, and tested for protection in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus). Vaccine efficacy was demonstrated in the fish vaccinated with recombinant capsid protein but not in the DNA-vaccinated fish, despite the fact that in vivo expression of the DNA vaccine-encoded antigen was confirmed by RNA in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry.

Like the orthomyxoviruses, ISAV has been shown to possess haemagglutinin (HA) activity. This study presents the cloning, expression and identification of the ISAV HA gene, which was isolated from a cDNA library by immunoscreening.
