Mutations of 1p genes do not consistently abrogate tumor suppressor functions in 1p-intact neuroblastoma.

Background: Deletion of 1p is associated with poor prognosis in neuroblastoma, however selected 1p-intact patients still experience poor outcomes. Since mutations of 1p genes may mimic the deleterious effects of chromosomal loss, we studied the incidence, spectrum and effects of mutational variants in 1p-intact neuroblastoma.

Methods: We characterized the 1p status of 325 neuroblastoma patients, and correlated the mutational status of 1p tumor suppressors and neuroblastoma candidate genes with survival outcomes among 100 1p-intact cases, then performed functional validation of selected novel variants of 1p36 genes identified from our patient cohort.

Ex vivo evaluation of personalized models can facilitate individualized treatment selection for patients, and advance the discovery of novel therapeutic options. However, for embryonal malignancies, representative primary cultures have been difficult to establish. We developed patient-derived cell cultures (PDCs) from chemo-naïve and post-treatment neuroblastoma tumors in a consistent and efficient manner, and characterized their in vitro growth dynamics, histomorphology, gene expression, and functional chemo-response.

Poor Sleep Quality, Depression and Social Support Are Determinants of Serum Phosphate Level among Hemodialysis Patients in Malaysia.

Despite optimal control of serum phosphate level being imperative to avoid undesirable health outcomes, hyperphosphataemia is a highly prevalent mineral abnormality among the dialysis population. This study aimed to determine factors associated with hyperphosphatemia among hemodialysis patients in Malaysia. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to ascertain the possible factors that influence serum phosphate levels.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is characterised by kinase mutations including EGFR internal tandem duplications, the ETV6-NTRK3 fusion, and the rare KLHL7-BRAF fusion.

Aims: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is histologically classified into classic, cellular and mixed subtypes. The aims of this study were to characterise the clinical, pathological and molecular features of a series of CMNs, and to determine the utility of pan-Trk and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) immunohistochemistry as surrogate markers for NTRK gene fusions and EGFR internal tandem duplications (ITDs).

Methods And Results: Twenty-two archival CMN cases (12 classic, five cellular, and five mixed) were tested for the ETV6-NTRK3 fusion and EGFR ITD transcripts by the use of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and next-generation sequencing-based anchored multiplex PCR.

Introduction: Victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests require timely cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation. Callers to emergency medical services are asked to provide dispatcher-guided responses until an ambulance arrives. Knowing what to expect in such circumstances should reduce both delay and confusion.

Measuring the effectiveness of a novel CPRcard™ feedback device during simulated chest compressions by non-healthcare workers.

Introduction: There is a need for a simple-to-use and easy-to-carry CPR feedback device for laypersons. We aimed to determine if a novel CPRcard™ feedback device improved the quality of chest compressions.

Methods: We compared participants' chest compression rate and depth with and without feedback.

Background: Mass Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training using less expensive and easily portable manikins is one way to increase the number of trained laypeople in a short time. The easy-to-carry, low-cost CPR training model called Push Heart (PH) is widely used in Japan. The aim of this study was to examine if PH can achieve chest compression quality that is similar to that using more conventional Little Anne (LA) manikins for training laypersons.

Performance of the LACE index to identify elderly patients at high risk for hospital readmission in Singapore.

Unplanned readmissions may be avoided by accurate risk prediction and appropriate resources could be allocated to high risk patients. The Length of stay, Acuity of admission, Charlson comorbidity index, Emergency department visits in past six months (LACE) index was developed to predict hospital readmissions in Canada. In this study, we assessed the performance of the LACE index in a Singaporean cohort by identifying elderly patients at high risk of 30-day readmissions.

Framework for Selecting Best Practices in Public Health: A Systematic Literature Review.

Evidence-based public health has commonly relied on findings from empirical studies, or research-based evidence. However, this paper advocates that practice-based evidence derived from programmes implemented in real-life settings is likely to be a more suitable source of evidence for inspiring and guiding public health programmes. Selection of best practices from the array of implemented programmes is one way of generating such practice-based evidence.

Synthetic methods for 3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hex-2-enes and 4-carbonylpyrroles have been developed that use copper-mediated/catalyzed reactions of N-allyl/propargyl enamine carboxylates under an O(2) atmosphere and involve intramolecular cyclopropanation and carbooxygenation, respectively.

Mn(III)-mediated formal [3+3]-annulation of vinyl azides and cyclopropanols: a divergent synthesis of azaheterocycles.

Mn(III)-mediated formal [3+3]-annulation has been developed using readily available vinyl azides and cyclopropanols with a wide range of substituents. Vinyl azides were successfully applied as a three-atom unit including one nitrogen to prepare pyridines and δ-lactams by the reactions with monocyclic cyclopropanols as well as to construct 2-azabicyclo[3.3.

Orbital metastases.

Background: Orbital metastasis, although uncommon, is a condition optometrists should consider in a patient presenting with proptosis, ptosis, diplopia, or a lid mass with a history of cancer. However, in as many as 19% of cases, patients have no prior or concurrent history of systemic cancer when presenting with ophthalmic symptoms. If suspecting an orbital metastasis, neuroimaging is important, as well as a referral to the patient's primary care provider, oncologist, and ophthalmologist.
