Background & Aims: Tufting enteropathy (TE) is a rare congenital disorder often caused by mutations in the gene encoding epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCam). The disease leads to diarrhoea, intestinal failure and dependence on total parenteral nutrition (TPN). These patients often have liver impairments, but the pathology and mechanism of the damage are not well understood.

Context: -The value of placental examination in investigations of adverse pregnancy outcomes may be compromised by sampling and definition differences between laboratories.

Objective: -To establish an agreed-upon protocol for sampling the placenta, and for diagnostic criteria for placental lesions. Recommendations would cover reporting placentas in tertiary centers as well as in community hospitals and district general hospitals, and are also relevant to the scientific research community.

Blastomyces dermatitidis is a dimorphic fungus endemic to much of North America, particularly the soils of the midwestern and southeastern United States. Human infection typically occurs through inhalation of airborne conidia, which can be followed occasionally by dissemination to the skin, bone, genitourinary system, and central nervous system. A hallmark of the pathogen is that it can cause disease in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed populations.

IPEX Syndrome is a well-characterized, however rare, autoimmune condition primarily affecting males presenting with neonatal onset of severe diarrhea, diabetes, dermatitis, and other autoimmune symptoms. The gene responsible for this condition, FOXP3, is important in the function of T-regulatory cells which maintain tolerance to self-antigens and are implicated in many autoimmune conditions. While females who carry FOXP3 mutations are typically asymptomatic, pregnancy loss of male fetuses in families with a history of IPEX syndrome has been noted.

The differential diagnosis of congenital lung lesions includes a variety of pulmonary malformations, and uncommon or rare neoplasms such as the pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) and congenital peribronchial myofibroblastic tumor (CPMT). Although most of the congenital lesions have a predominantly cystic appearance, the exceptions of a more solid process are the type 3 congenital cystic adenomatoid or pulmonary airway malformation (CCAM-CPAM) and the CPMT. The clinical and pathologic features of a unique solid or mixed solid/cystic lung mass composed of immature interstitial mesenchyme in association with irregular airspace-like structures mimicking abnormal incompletely developed lung are presented in this report of 10 infants (7 males, 3 females) whose tumor-like lesions were detected in the prenatal period to 3 months of age (median, 1-day old).

Four small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) genes have been identified in humans. However, little is known about the basic biology of SUMO-4. Here, we report that SUMO-4 differs from SUMO-1, -2, and -3 in that the maturation process of SUMO-4 to active form containing C-terminal di-glycine residues is inhibited by a unique proline residue located at position 90 (Pro-90).
