Background: One rationale for dichoptic amblyopia therapy is that it may promote recovery of binocular function. Yet data on binocular outcomes in anisometropic amblyopia following dichoptic therapy are sparse. We report factors associated with pre- and post-treatment binocular function in anisometropic amblyopia, and examine binocular function in children who recover normal visual acuity compared to those with residual amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a disorder of neurodevelopment that occurs when there is discordant binocular visual experience during the first years of life. While treatments are effective in improving visual acuity, there are significant individual differences in response to treatment that cannot be attributed solely to difference in adherence. We investigated the suitability of the graphitic carbon (GC) content of diesel particulate matter (DPM), measured using Raman spectroscopy, as a surrogate measure of elemental carbon (EC) determined by thermal optical analysis. The Raman spectra in the range of 800-1800 cm (including the D mode at ∼1322 cm and the G mode at ∼1595 cm) were used for GC identification and quantification. Comparison of the Raman spectra for two certified DPM standards (NIST SRM 1650 and SRM 2975), two types of diesel engine exhaust soot, and three types of DPM-enriched workplace aerosols show that the uncertainty of GC quantification based on the D peak height, G peak height, and the total peak area below D and G peaks was about 6.

Purpose: Standard-of-care assessment for children with amblyopia includes measuring amblyopic eye best-corrected visual acuity (AE BCVA) with the fellow eye occluded. Twenty adolescents (12-17 years old) with diplopic strabismus and 20 with nondiplopic strabismus (matched to diplopic subjects for direction and magnitude of ocular deviation) completed the Pediatric Eye Questionnaire (PedEyeQ). There is a lack of normative data for children tested with the electronic Early Treatment for Diabetic Retinopathy Study (E-ETDRS) protocol. Methods: A total of 1,037 children with an eye condition and 254 visually normal controls, across 0-4, 5-11, and 12-17 years age groups, completed the following questionnaires: Child PedEyeQ (Functional Vision, Bothered by Eyes/Vision, Social, Frustration/Worry domains), Proxy PedEyeQ (same domains plus Eye Care), and Parent PedEyeQ (Impact on Parent and Family, Worry about Child's Eye Condition, Worry about Child's Self-perception and Interactions, and Worry about Functional Vision domains).
