The fast development of high throughput genotyping has opened up new possibilities in genetics while at the same time producing considerable data handling issues. TheSNPpit is a database system for managing large amounts of multi panel SNP genotype data from any genotyping platform. With an increasing rate of genotyping in areas like animal and plant breeding as well as human genetics, already now hundreds of thousand of individuals need to be managed.

Complex open source information systems are usually implemented as component-based software to inherit the available functionality of existing software packages developed by third parties. Consequently, the deployment of these systems not only requires the installation of operating system, application framework and the configuration of services but also needs to resolve the dependencies among components. The problem becomes more challenging when the application must be installed and used on different platforms such as Linux and Windows.

Therefore, molecular labs do need a proper information system to handle an increasing amount of data from different projects.
Results: We have developed a molecular labs information management system (MolabIS).
Unlabelled: Many countries in the world have set up national domestic conservation programmes and collections of long-term storage of cryo-preserved animal genetic material. We have developed a web based software - CryoWEB for the documentation of such collections. The software is generally applicable to all livestock breeds, independent of the donor's species and the type of preserved material.

This article describes the synchronization protocol developed in APIIS (adaptable platform independent information system) framework and reviews the basic considerations required when building distributed information system that has to exchange information in a network of APIIS based systems. The protocol is designed to synchronize a common part of different database structures.
