Effects of heme oxygenase-1 on bacterial antigen-induced articular chondrocyte catabolism in vitro.

This study tested the hypothesis that heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression counteracts bacterial antigen-induced catabolic metabolism in human articular chondrocytes. HO-1 expression was induced in chondrocytes by the iron-containing porphoryin, hemin. Anti-catabolic and anti-apoptotic effects of HO-1 expression were evaluated following bacterial antigen (lipopolysaccharides, LPS) activation of chondrocytes by quantification of cytokine and cartilage matrix protein expression.

Venous hemodynamic alterations in lower limbs undergoing total joint arthroplasty.

Using duplex ultrasonography, we measured preoperative and postoperative venous flow volume in 32 operated lower limbs without deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after total hip arthroplasty (THA, n = 17) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA, n = 15). We also calculated percentage decrease in mean venous flow volume (MVFV) from before surgery to after surgery. Patients with a history of one of several venous diseases, congestive heart failure, or morbid obesity were excluded.

Intraarticular findings in symptomatic developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Background: The purpose of this study was to examine intraarticular pathology in patients younger than 20 years with symptomatic developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Methods: We performed hip arthroscopy during corrective osteotomy in 23 hips in 22 patients. All patients were female, and the average age at operation was 16.

Modulation of allograft incorporation by continuous infusion of growth factors over a prolonged duration in vivo.

Morselized cancellous allograft bone is frequently used in the reconstruction of bone defects in cases of revision total joint replacement, trauma, spine fusion and treated infection. However, the initial lack of viable bone cells in morselized allograft bone significantly slows the process of graft incorporation compared to autograft bone. This study examined the effects of prolonged local infusion of the growth factors bone morphogenic protein-7 (BMP-7 or OP-1) and fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2 or basic FGF) in the process of allograft incorporation using a rabbit tibial chamber model.

Simple screening method for deep vein thrombosis by duplex ultrasonography using patients' active maximum ankle dorsiflexion.

We hypothesized that venous obstruction by deep vein thrombosis (DVT) only slightly augments venous outflow from lower limbs by active ankle movements. If our hypothesis is true, we thought that we could develop a new screening method for DVT using duplex ultrasonography. Subjects were 22 lower limbs of 11 patients who gave informed consent for venography after total hip or knee arthroplasty.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis: etiology and treatment.

Progression of slip is apt to cause complications including osteonecrosis and osteoarthritis. Such complications result in a poor prognosis for the joint. Therefore, to diagnose slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) while it is still mild is important to avoid complications as well as to prevent further slippage.

Relationship between the maximum flexion-internal rotation test and the torn acetabular labrum of a dysplastic hip.

To determine the relationship between pain at flexion-rotation and the status of a labral tear in patients with dysplastic hips, physical examination maneuvers and hip arthroscopy were carried out in 59 patients with dysplastic osteoarthritis (5 men and 54 women; mean age, 41 years; range, 16 to 64 years). Between January 1998 and June 2000, these patients underwent 60 hip arthroscopies at Kyushu University Hospital. All hip joints arthroscoped demonstrated incomplete or complete detaching tears of the acetabular labrum in one portion of the weight-bearing area.
