A model utilizing human umbilical cord blood was used to screen for hypoglycemia in a simulated neonatal situation. The aims of the study were to assess the effect of increasing Hct concentration on Dextrostix readings, and to determine whether plasma samples, in contrast to conventional whole blood samples, were acceptable for Dextrostix determinations in selected cases. Dextrostix readings were determined on 65 whole blood samples of varying Hct, and on plasma specimens, 48 of which were paired with whole blood samples.

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia or, as otherwise known, jaundice of the newborn is the most common clinical problem in the newborn period. Visible jaundice is seen in 30% to 50% of infants, and in about 10%, the hyperbilirubinemia requires treatment. The critical factor that leads to the accumulation of this yellow pigment bilirubin is the immaturity of the newborn's liver and its inability to excrete the natural form of unconjugated bilirubin.

In the present study, we have compared the ability of mothers and fathers to recognize their newborns' photographs during the early postpartum period. The cerebrohepatorenal syndrome of Zellweger (CHRS) is a rare, fatal disorder in newborn infants. Recent research points to a primary absence of tissue peroxisomes, with resulting biochemical defects, as the basic pathology of the condition. We report on an infant with classic neurological and dysmorphic features of CHRS.

Following previous observations that medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are absorbed from the stomach of suckling rats, this study was devoted to studying absorption of MCTs in human infants. Four groups of patients were studied: (a) infants suffering from pyloric stenosis, (b) premature infants, (c) children suffering from cystic fibrosis, (d) infants with miscellaneous conditions. Infant formulae with known amounts of MCT were introduced by gastric tube and samples were removed at 0, 20, 40, and 60 min.

We report that 90% of women tested in the present study identified their newborns by olfactory cues after only 10 min-1 hr exposure to their infants. All of the women tested recognized their babies' odor after exposure periods greater than 1 hr. The robust results are due in part to the implementation of an initial screening phase in which individuals with obvious olfactory deficits were excluded from the sample.
