Twin comparisons offer a powerful quasi-experimental design to study the impact of the family of origin on children's life chances. In the smut fungus Ustilago maydis, a tightly regulated cAMP signaling cascade is necessary for pathogenic development. Transcriptome analysis using whole genome microarrays set up to identify putative target genes of the protein kinase A catalytic subunit Adr1 revealed nine genes with putative functions in two high-affinity iron uptake systems. These genes locate to three gene clusters on different chromosomes and include the previously identified complementing siderophore auxotroph genes sid1 and sid2 involved in siderophore biosynthesis.

This paper reports on the identification and characterization of a new ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter which was identified as a salicylic acid-induced gene from soybean (Glycine max cv. Williams 82) in a subtractive suppression hybridization approach. A fragment of an ABC-transporter gene was used to isolate a full-length cDNA clone for this gene with a length of 4750 bp.

Human skeletal muscle stem cells from healthy donors aged 2-82 years (n = 13) and from three children suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) were implanted into soleus muscles of immunoincompetent mice and were also expanded in vitro until senescence. Growth of implanted cells was quantified by structural features and by the amount of human DNA present in a muscle. Proliferative capacity in vitro and in vivo was inversely related to age of the donor.

To identify plant-induced genes in the maize pathogenic fungus Ustilago maydis we have developed a genetic screen that combines REMI (restriction enzyme mediated integration) mutagenesis with enhancer trapping using the gene for Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) as vital reporter. Of 2,350 insertion mutants isolated, three were shown to express GFP only after the fungus had come into contact with the host maize plant. One of the genes tagged was mfa1, which encodes the pheromone precursor, while the second gene, pig2, codes for a product that showed similarity to protein disulfide isomerase.

Among 248 patients seen for posterior cruciate ligament insufficiency, 109 (44%) had fixed posterior subluxation of the tibia, defined as a condition in which posterior sag could not be reduced to a neutral position, as evidenced by posterior tibial displacement of 3 mm or more on anterior stress radiographs at 200 N.
