Background: Student-run free clinics are present at many medical schools throughout the United States. While many work with adult homeless or uninsured populations, few work with pediatric populations. We investigated the impact of volunteering at a free preparticipation sports physical clinic on medical students' educational motivation, school engagement, confidence in their clinical skills, connectedness to community, and self-efficacy.

Neutrophil infiltration occurs in a variety of liver diseases, but it is unclear how neutrophils and hepatocytes interact. Neutrophils generally use granule proteases to digest phagocytosed bacteria and foreign substances or neutralize them in neutrophil extracellular traps. In certain pathological states, granule proteases play a destructive role against the host as well.

NCS-1 protein regulates TRPA1 channel through the PI3K pathway in breast cancer and neuronal cells.

The physical and functional interaction between transient receptor potential channel ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) and neuronal calcium sensor 1 (NCS-1) was assessed. NCS-1 is a calcium (Ca) sensor found in many tissues, primarily neurons, and TRPA1 is a Ca channel involved not only in thermal and pain sensation but also in conditions such as cancer and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, in which NCS-1 is also a regulatory component.We explored the interactions between these two proteins by employing western blot, qRT-PCR, co-immunoprecipitation, Ca transient monitoring with Fura-2 spectrophotometry, and electrophysiology assays in breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) with different levels of NCS-1 expression and neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y).

Treatment-related mortality in children with cancer in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Approximately 90% of children with cancer live in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where 5-year survival is lower than 20%. Treatment-related mortality in high-income countries is approximately 3-5%; however, in LMICs, treatment-related mortality has been reported in up to 45% of children with cancer. This study aimed to systematically explore the burden of treatment-related mortality in children with cancer in LMICs and to explore the association between country income level and treatment-related mortality.

Calcium signaling in chemotherapy-induced neuropathy.

Alterations in calcium (Ca) signaling is a major mechanism in the development of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), a side effect caused by multiple chemotherapy regimens. CIPN is associated with numbness and incessant tingling in hands and feet which diminishes quality of life during treatment. In up to 50% of survivors, CIPN is essentially irreversible.

Dramatic improvements in cancer survival have occurred in the last decade, but the quality of life for many survivors is compromised due to severe, long-lasting, and often irreversible side effects of chemotherapy. The neurological side effects, chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and cancer related/induced cognitive impairment (CRCI/CICI), are under-recognized and can occur after chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or radiation. Biomarkers of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: Current Status and Future Directions.

Chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is an often severe and debilitating complication of multiple chemotherapeutic agents that can affect patients of all ages, across cancer diagnoses. CIPN can persist post-therapy, and significantly impact the health and quality of life of cancer survivors. Identifying patients at risk for CIPN is challenging due to the lack of standardized objective measures to assess for CIPN.

Importance: The World Health Organization (WHO) designates early integration of palliative care as an ethical responsibility in the treatment of children with serious illness. Although structural barriers may influence provision of pediatric palliative care (PPC) for children with cancer in resource-limited settings, underlying physician perceptions may also impede early integration of PPC in cancer care.

Objective: To investigate perceptions among physicians in Latin America about the integration of palliative care for children with cancer.

Drug treatment against liver cancer has limited efficacy due to heterogeneous response among liver cancer subtypes. In addition, the functional biophysical phenotypes which arise from this heterogeneity and contribute to aggressive invasive behavior remain poorly understood. This study interrogated how heterogeneity in liver cancer subtypes contributes to differences in invasive phenotypes and drug response.

Translating Research to Action: The Development of a Pediatric Palliative Cancer Care Advocacy Tool in Eurasia.

Purpose: The Assessing Doctors' Attitudes on Palliative Treatment study was conducted in 11 Eurasian countries to assess physician knowledge of and structural barriers to integration of palliative care into pediatric oncology. After publication, regional collaborators identified the need to disseminate country-specific study results locally and provide policy recommendations to inform stakeholders.

Methods: The Assessing Doctors' Attitudes on Palliative Treatment report was developed with Eurasian and St Jude pediatric palliative care and oncology experts to summarize study findings and deliver country-level data to local stakeholders.
