Effectiveness of Glycated Haemoglobin in the Diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus among Pregnant Women in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Background: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a common metabolic complication in pregnancy with a broad range of adverse foetal and maternal outcomes if not properly managed. Due to the difficult nature of the Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), the utilization of the Glycatedhaemoglobin (HbA1c) test as a simpler and acceptable alternative has been suggested. The aims were to determine the GDM prevalence, the diagnostic accuracy, the optimal cut-off point and the validity of the HbA1c in diagnosing GDM using OGTT as the gold standard in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

Is serum PSA a predictor of male hypogonadism? Testing the hypothesis.

Objective: Male hypogonadism (MH) is common among infertile men. Besides testosterone, limited MH biomarkers are available, while researchers have suggested the use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) to help diagnose MH. Hence, we sought to evaluate the potential use of PSA to predict MH among relatively young men with infertility in Nigeria.

The impact of plasma zinc status on the severity of prostate cancer disease.

Purpose: The severity of prostate cancer (PCa), which determines the disease progression, is theorized to be a function of zinc status. Hence, this study was structured to determine the impact of zinc status on the severity and progression of PCa disease.

Materials And Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 220 histologically-confirmed PCa patients and 220 age-matched controls, conducted prospectively in a Nigerian tertiary hospital.

Background: Elevated cardiac troponin I, Creatine kinase (CK-MB) and Myoglobin levels are observed in the setting of acute myocardial damage. However sub-clinical elevations occur in patients with diabetes mellitus. This study was carried out to determine the relationship between the presence of multiple cardiovascular risk factors and the metabolic syndrome and elevations in cardiac markers in patients with type2 diabetes mellitus.
