Age-related changes in biochemical bone profile in thalassemic children.

Background: Osteopathy is an important cause of morbidity in β-thalassemia major (TM). Although many of the etiopathological factors implicated in thalassemic osteoporosis commence in early disease phases during childhood, limited information exists on bone turnover in children with TM. This study was conducted with the objective to compare bone turnover markers (BTMs) in thalassemic children at different ages.

Prognostic significance of early platelet count decline in preterm newborns.

Objectives: Decline of platelets with or without thrombocytopenia is observed in critically ill preterm newborns. Prognostic significance of platelets count in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit focused on outcome after thrombocytopenia. We aimed to estimate the changes in platelets count within the first 7 days of life in preterm newborns and its relation to final outcomes.

The effect of adenoidectomy on right ventricular performance in children.

Objective: Several studies have shown a reduction in pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) after adenoidectomy in children suffering form upper airway obstruction caused by adenoid hypertrophy (AH). However, it is not clear whether this would be significantly reflected on right ventricle output (RVO).

Methods: Our aim was to determine if there were any detectable changes in RV performance parameters after adenoidectomy in children with AH.

Pressure support ventilation combined with volume guarantee versus synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation: a pilot crossover trial in premature infants in their weaning phase.

Objective: To compare pressure support ventilation combined with volume guarantee (PSV-VG) to synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) regarding safety, course of blood gases, and infant-ventilator interaction in premature infants.

Design: Prospective, two-treatment, crossover pilot study.

Setting: Tertiary care neonatal unit.
