Article Synopsis
  • Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is a highly aggressive liver cancer with poor treatment options, prompting research into new therapies targeting the Heat Shock Factor 1 (HSF1) transcription factor.
  • Studies showed that HSF1 levels are significantly elevated in various stages of iCCA and correlate with worse patient outcomes, while inhibiting HSF1 delayed tumor development in mouse models.
  • The HSF1 inhibitor KRIBB-11 was effective in slowing iCCA cell growth, inducing cell death, and reducing key metabolic functions in cancer cells, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic avenue.

Despite high incidence rates and severe complications, the management of xerostomia lacks clinical guidelines. The aim of this overview was to summarize the clinical experience derived from the last 10 years of treatments and prevention using systemic compounds. Results showed that the cytoprotective drug amifostine, and its antioxidant agents, are the most discussed as preventive agents of xerostomia in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients.

Article Synopsis
  • A variety of disorders can impact the oral cavity, ranging from genetic diseases to infections and cancers, with many conditions being harmless or linked to systemic diseases.
  • The oral mucosa exhibits significant structural variability, and lesions can manifest as ulcers or discoloration, posing diagnostic challenges due to the rarity of some conditions.
  • The review highlights specific genetic disorders affecting oral health, including genodermatoses and other related syndromes, noting their complex manifestations and potential impact on oral anatomy.

The aim of the work was to extract, characterize, and formulate Thymus capitatus (Tymbra capitata) essential oil in phospholipid vesicles: liposomes, glycerosomes and Penetration Enhancer-containing Vesicles (PEVs). The steam-distilled essential oil was mainly composed of carvacrol. The oil was mixed with lecithin and water to produce liposomes, or different ratios of water/glycerol or water/propylene glycol (PG) to produce glycerosomes and PG-PEVs, respectively.

Purpose: To critically discuss adhesive materials and oral cariogenic biofilm in terms of their potential relevance to the failures of adhesive restorations in the oral environment.

Methods: The literature regarding adhesive restoration failures was reviewed with particular emphasis on the chemistry of adhesive resins, weakness in dentin bonding, water fluids, cariogenic oral biofilm and the relations that influence failures. Particular attention was paid to evidence derived from clinical studies.

In this study, we aimed to clarify the effects of phenolic compounds and extracts from different extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) varieties obtained from fruits of different ripening stages on osteoblast cells (MG-63) proliferation. Cell proliferation was increased by hydroxytyrosol, luteolin, apigenin, p-coumaric, caffeic, and ferulic acids by approximately 11-16%, as compared with controls that were treated with one vehicle alone, while (+)-pinoresinol, oleuropein, sinapic, vanillic acid and derivative (vanillin) did not affect cell proliferation. All phenolic extracts stimulated MG-63 cell growth, and they induced higher cell proliferation rates than individual compounds.

Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) have shown relevant potential for cell therapy in the orthopedic and odontoiatric fields. The optimization of their osteogenic potential is currently a major challenge. Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF A) has been recently reported to act as a major conductor of osteogenesis in vitro and in vivo.

The tissue engineering (TE) of dental oral tissue is facing significant changes in clinical treatments in dentistry. TE is based on a stem cell, signaling molecule, and scaffold triad that must be known and calibrated with attention to specific sectors in dentistry. This review article shows a summary of micro- and nanomorphological characteristics of dental tissues, of stem cells available in the oral region, of signaling molecules usable in TE, and of scaffolds available to guide partial or total reconstruction of hard, soft, periodontal, and bone tissues.

Background: The irradiation of head and neck cancer (HNC) often causes damage to the salivary glands. The resulting salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia seriously reduce the patient's quality of life.

Purpose: To analyze the literature of actual management strategies for radiation-induced hypofunction and xerostomia in HNC patients.

This paper aims to provide a systematic review of the caries-prevention effect of probiotics in human. The hypothesis was that the administration of probiotic strains might play a role in caries lesion prevention and in the control of caries-related risk factors. The main relevant databases (Medline, Embase) were searched.

Purpose: To examine morphologically the hybrid layer of one-step self-etching adhesive, Clearfil S3 Bond (S3bond), in caries-affected dentin (CAD) and deep sound dentin (DSD) cavities performed clinically. For a comparative group, the two-step self etching adhesive Clearfil Protect Bond (Pbond) was used in a similar clinical situation.

Methods: This study was carried out on carious and sound teeth clinically selected for extraction.

Objective: This paper focuses on clinical responses after 7 days of oral exposure to two resin-based materials as desensitizing agents compared to a fluoride varnish and on morphological and analytical study as a means to elucidate the mechanism of action.

Materials And Methods: The elemental composition of Vertise™ Flow (VF), Universal Dentine Sealant (UDS) and Flor-Opal® Varnish (FOV) were investigated by using an X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDX) in conjunction with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM morphology of the material-treated dentine surfaces and pain reduction ability according to the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were evaluated in selected hypersensitive teeth.

Objective: This paper aims to provide a systematic review of the caries-prevention effect of fluoridated food, excluding water. The main aim of this review was to evaluate the presence of scientific evidence relating to the effects of fluoride intake via food on the occurrence of carious lesions. The outcome was defined as a clinical outcome, so only papers evaluating a decrease in caries indices were included.

Adhesive dentistry is based on the development of materials which establish an effective bond with the tooth tissues. In this context, adhesive systems have attracted considerable research interest in recent years. Successful adhesive bonding depends on the chemistry of the adhesive, on appropriate clinical handling of the material as well as on the knowledge of the morphological changes caused on dental tissue by different bonding procedures.

Purpose: To compare microleakage of Class V restorations filled with a novel low-shrinkage resin-based composite cured by a high intensity light and a combination of controls including a conventional composite cured by conventional and soft-start regimes.

Methods: Forty-two intact premolar and molar teeth were randomly assigned to seven groups and filled with a low-shrinkage composite or a conventional composite, bonded with one of two bonding materials (Excite or Prime&Bond NT) and cured with either a high intensity light, a soft-start regime or a conventional light regime. Cavities were cut in both the buccal and lingual aspects of each tooth with half of the preparation in enamel and half in dentin/cementum.
