The effect of extreme water repellency, called the lotus effect, is caused by the formation of a Cassie-Baxter state in which only a small portion of the wetting liquid droplet is in contact with the surface. The rest of the bottom of the droplet is in contact with air pockets. Instrumental methods are often used to determine the textural features that cause this effect-scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, profilometry, etc.

Epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) of GaN epilayers on a sapphire substrate was studied by using a laser-patterned graphene interlayer. Monolayer graphene was transferred onto the sapphire substrate using a wet transfer technique, and its quality was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The graphene layer was ablated using a femtosecond laser, which produced well-defined patterns without damaging the underlying sapphire substrate.

Filamentation of Bessel-Gauss pulses propagating in borosilicate glass is found to produce damage lines extending over hundreds of micrometers and consisting of discrete, equidistant damage spots. These discrete damage traces are explained by self-regeneration of Gauss-Bessel beams during propagation and are potentially applicable in laser microfabrication of transparent materials.
