Background: This study was undertaken to investigate whether coronary flow reserve (CFR) using coronary sinus flow (CSF), which can be measured by transesophageal Doppler echocardiography (TEDE), especially when contrast enhanced, is useful in evaluating microvascular dysfunction in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM).
Methods And Results: CSF recordings using contrast enhanced TEDE were performed before and after adenosine triphosphate infusion (0.15 mg x kg(-1) x min(-1)) in 16 patients with type 2 DM and diabetic retinopathy and in 13 non-DM patients (control).

Rab24 is a member of the Rab GTPase family, but its function is unclear. Here, we demonstrated increase in Rab24 mRNA in nerve-injured hypoglossal motor neurons of rats. Expression of Rab24 mRNA was also induced in differentiated PC12 cells following proteasome inhibitor (MG132) treatment.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute myocardial infarctions are common in bacteraemia but are seldom diagnosed during life. A 64 year old man with severe chest pain who had fever for several days due to possible bacteraemia was shown by ECG and echocardiography to have possible lateral infarction. Immediate coronary angiography showed possible thrombus in the left circumflex artery, which was treated by thrombectomy catheter.

Design: Cross-sectional study.
Setting And Subjects: We studied 1249 men and 3007 women (age 20-79 years) who attended a research institute for a health checkup between October 1995 and February 2004.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to generate a human monoclonal antibody specific to gynecological cancers and to evaluate such an antibody as therapy for gynecological cancers.
Experimental Design: Transchromosomal KM mice were immunized with the human uterine endometrial cancer cell line SNG-S. Hybridomas were constructed between spleen cells from KM mice and mouse myeloma cells.
It has previously been demonstrated that cork tissue increases the efficiency of the production of lipophilic secondary metabolites in diverse plant cell suspension cultures. In the present study, three new homoisoflavonoids--named dihydrobonducellin, 2'-methoxydihydrobonducellin, and 2'-methoxybonducellin--and bonducellin and isobonducellin were isolated from Caesalpinia pulcherrima cultured cells coincubated with cork tissue. Cork tissue increased the production of 2'-methoxybonducellin by about 7-fold relative to control cells, and more than 80% of the product was recoverable from the cork tissue.

Purpose: To clarify the content of support for healthy aging, we analyzed age-related changes in functional capacity and factors affecting the maintenance based on a health status survey in elderly people, and also evaluated the results of a survey on functional capacity, living habits, and health in leaders in elderly people's clubs.
Methods: A questionnaire survey was carried out with (1) 1,000 randomly selected elderly subjects aged > or = 65 years and (2) 122 leaders in elderly people's clubs to evaluate functional capacity according to The Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence, feeling of happiness according to the morale scale established by Lawton, living habits, and health. Factors affecting functional capacity were identified by stepwise multiple longistic regression analysis.
Predicting the effect of beta-blockade therapy on the clinical outcome of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is difficult prior to the initiation of therapy. Myocardial fatty acid metabolism has been shown to be impaired in patients with DCM. We examined whether the extent of myocardial injury, as assessed by iodine-123 15-( p-iodophenyl)-3- R, S-methylpentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) myocardial scintigraphy, is related to the response of patients with DCM to beta-blockade therapy.

Vascular ACE activity in the culprit coronary lesions of these patients, however, has never been quantified.
Methods And Results: We measured the ACE activity of vascular tissue obtained by directional coronary atherectomy in patients with acute coronary syndrome (n=17) and in patients with stable ischemic heart disease (n=36), with and without restenosis.
Objective: In this study the authors measured the number of adults in three U.S. communities who reported abusing and neglecting children in their lifetime and assessed the relative impact of sociodemographic characteristics and lifetime diagnosis of mental disorders on both child abuse and child neglect.

Comparison of the 2 SPECT images revealed that a decreased regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the first was normalized in 4 cases (22.2%) and contracted in 7 cases (38.
