Background: At the present time, only visual analysis is implemented on dacryoscintigraphic images and quantitative assessments are not routinely obtained. The authors have designed a novel, simple, quantitative method for the diagnosis of sac and post-sac obstructions based on the dacryoscintigraphic images.

Method: Fifty-nine patients with severe unilateral epiphora were included and the contralateral asymptomatic eyes were used as controls.

Whole body bone scan with Technetium-99m MDP (methylene diphosphate) can detect bony lesions due to altered osteoblastic activity.Non-physiologic or increased radiotracer uptake in the bony structures of patients with a history of malignant diseases is usually interpreted as being suspicious of bone metastasis. It is extremely important to properly distinguish false positive sites of Tc-99m MDP localization.

Hydatid disease is common in many parts of the world, and causes considerable health and economic loss. This disease may develop in almost any part of the body.Bone involvement is often asymptomatic, and its diagnosis is primarily based on radiographic findings.

Purpose: There are a limited number of case reports confirming the radioiodine (I-131) presence in tears and only a few case reports of lacrimal gland dysfunction after I-131 therapy. This study was designed to clarify whether lacrimal gland function can be affected by I-131 therapy.

Materials And Methods: We studied 100 eyes of 50 patients who had received high doses of I-131 for treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma and 100 eyes of 50 age- and sex-matched control individuals without a history of interfering conditions.

Effects of dietary zinc supplement during lactation on maternal zinc plasma and milk zinc concentration through 5 months of lactation were examined. One hundred and thirty eight healthy lactating mothers received a weekly 100 mg elemental zinc supplement (ZS, n = 67) or placebo (PG, n = 71) starting one week postpartum in a double blind, randomized design. Milk and plasma zinc concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

The present research was conduted to examine the relationship between thyroid function and body mass index. A cross-sectional study was carried out in Lar province and its' vicinity in south of Iran. By stepwise random sampling from all public girls' high schools, 227 high school participants (aged 12-21) were selected.

Background: Different techniques in neuroimaging have been proposed for assessment of olfactory dysfunction but they are not without limitations. Recently, some studies showed the usefulness of single photon emission-computed tomography (SPECT) in evaluation of patients with posttraumatic anosmia. This study was designed to assess the possible diagnostic value of SPECT findings in patients with posttraumatic anosmia in comparison with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/CT imaging.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of treatment with radioactive iodine ((131)I) on gonadal function in males and females with follicular or papillary thyroid carcinoma. Consenting patients at reproductive age were grouped according to the cumulative dose of (131)I received and followed-up for at least 12 months. Overall, 246 patients (159 females, 87 males) were studied.

Incidentally the diagnosis of pleural effusions can be made with scintigraphic studies. We report a case of incidental detection of pleural effusion in sestamibi myocardial perfusion scan. A 64-year-old man with a history of chest pain was referred for Sestamibi myocardial perfusion scintigraphy.

Introduction: In the management of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma, serum thyroglobulin levels are often well correlated with whole-body radioiodine scanning (WBS) results. However, occasionally, a mismatched result - increased thyroglobulin with negative WBS - is observed. Radioiodine therapy has been suggested as a therapeutic choice with controversial results.

Background: Limited available data indicate that a specific pattern of increased gastric wall radiotracer uptake is associated with dyspepsia. Our purpose was to evaluate the frequency of this finding and its relation with dyspeptic evidences.

Method: 1056 consecutive outpatients referred for myocardial perfusion SPECT were interviewed concerning the dyspeptic symptoms, current gastric medications and previous gastroduodenal interventions.

Background: Cardiac syndrome X is defined by a typical angina pectoris with normal or near normal (stenosis <40%) coronary angiogram with or without electrocardiogram (ECG) change or atypical angina pectoris with normal or near normal coronary angiogram plus a positive none-invasive test (exercise tolerance test or myocardial perfusion scan) with or without ECG change. Studies with myocardial perfusion imaging on this syndrome have indicated some abnormal perfusion scan. We evaluated the role of myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and also the severity and extent of perfusion abnormality using Tc-99m MIBI Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) in these patients.

Extensive data from animal and human studies indicate that iron deficiency impairs thyroid metabolism. The aim of this study was to determine thyroid hormone status in iron-deficient adolescent girls. By stepwise random sampling from among all public high schools for girls in Lar and its vicinity in southern Iran, 103 out of 431 iron deficient subjects were selected.

A 54 year old man was referred to us from his private physician for ventilation-perfusion lung scan. In both scans radiotracer activity was absent in the region of the right lung, while a prior chest X-rays film revealed no remarkable abnormality. Subsequent chest computed tomography revealed a hilar mass compressing the hilar vascular and bronchial area components.

Technetium-99m methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) has been proposed as an in-vivo marker of various active malignant diseases. The goal of this study was to evaluate the 99mTc-MIBI whole body scintiscan for the early detection of multiple myeloma (MM), active or in remission. We have studied 43 patients with MM, 32 men and 11 women aged 52+/-10 years.

Radioiodine (131I) treatment is often applied for the treatment of Graves' disease (GD). The optimal dose of 131I for Graves' hyperthyroidism is debated. Various techniques suggest either fixed doses or varying doses based on elaborate calculations of the gland size, 131I uptake, and 131I turnover.

Background: Most olfactory testings are subjective and since they depend upon the patients' response, they are prone to false positive results. The aim of this study was to use quantitative brain perfusion SPECT in order to detect possible areas of brain activation in response to odorant stimulation in patients with post-traumatic impaired smell in comparison to a group of normal subjects.

Methods: Fourteen patients with post-traumatic impaired smell and ten healthy controls were entered in this prospective study.

Sialadenitis and xerostomia are well-known side effects of high-dose radioactive iodine ((131)Iota) treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). This study was undertaken to determine salivary gland function semi-quantitatively in patients with DTC given (131)I for the treatment of the thyroid remnant and/or metastases. Thirty-six patients, 11 males and 25 females, mean age 53.

The study was undertaken in order to estimate the radiation doses, that patients from Iran who received Na(131)I for the treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) emit to their environment and also in order to evaluate the instructions given to these patients after being released from the nuclear medicine department. In 29 patients with DTC following thyroidectomy and immediately after the administration of therapeutic Na(131)I for the ablation of the thyroid remnants, the dose rates from the (131)I radioactivity emitted by these patients was measured at 3 meters. Also in these patients the dose rates from the (131)I were measured before they left the nuclear medicine department, at distances of 0.
