Producing two-dimensional dust clouds and clusters using a movable electrode for complex plasma and fundamental physics experiments.

We report a Bidirectional Electrode Control Arm Assembly (BECAA) for precisely manipulating dust clouds levitated above the powered electrode in RF plasmas. The reported techniques allow the creation of perfectly 2D dust layers by eliminating off-plane particles by moving the electrode from outside the plasma chamber without altering the plasma conditions. The tilting and moving of electrodes using BECAA also allows the precise and repeatable elimination of dust particles one by one to achieve any desired number of grains N without trial and error.

Using telemedicine and wearable technology to establish a virtual clinic for people with Parkinson's disease.

Background: To develop an effective, patient-centred and sustainable service, we set up a virtual clinic (VC) for patients with Parkinson's disease, combining phone consultations and reports from wearable technology. The Parkinson's Kinetigraph (PKG) is a wrist-worn device providing objective motor assessment, generating a report used by clinicians to optimise medication regimens.

Interventions: A pilot study of VC was designed using quality improvement methodology.

Dynamics of dust particles confined in imposed potential structures in strongly magnetized, low-temperature plasmas.

A new phenomenon called imposed ordered structures has been of particular interest to the dusty plasma community within the past several years. These structures are a new type of pattern formation within a dusty plasma in which the dust particles become fixed to a background confining potential whose spatial structure is determined by some conducting element present in the plasma. In previous works, this element has typically been a conducting wire mesh.

Context Matters: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Associations With Military Sexual Trauma Event Characteristics and Dual Histories of Interpersonal Trauma.

Despite the high rates of military sexual trauma (MST) experienced by service members and veterans, little is known about how contextual features of the MST event or concurrent histories of other interpersonal traumas are associated with diverse clinical presentations. This study examined contextual factors of MST events (number of perpetrators, location of MST, relationship to perpetrator, location of MST) and dual history of interpersonal traumas (including sexual abuse or assault throughout the lifespan, repeated MST, and intimate partner violence) in relation to total symptoms and symptom clusters of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). MST involving multiple perpetrators was related to higher avoidance and hyperarousal.

Tiered Approach to Resilience Assessment.

Regulatory agencies have long adopted a three-tier framework for risk assessment. We build on this structure to propose a tiered approach for resilience assessment that can be integrated into the existing regulatory processes. Comprehensive approaches to assessing resilience at appropriate and operational scales, reconciling analytical complexity as needed with stakeholder needs and resources available, and ultimately creating actionable recommendations to enhance resilience are still lacking.

Amaurosis fugax associated with congenital vascular defect.

A 68-year-old female with no significant past medical history presented with loss of vision in the lower half of her left eye that lasted <5 minutes. No abnormalities were found on ocular or physical exam. Computed tomography angiography and carotid ultrasound were performed, which confirmed the diagnosis as amaurosis fugax with two abnormalities leading to the transient retinal vessel occlusion.

Discrepancies between upper GI symptoms described by those who have them and their identification by conventional medical terminology: a survey of sufferers in four countries.

Objective: The objective of this study was to develop a self-administered questionnaire for upper gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms using lay vocabulary uninfluenced by established medical terminology or concepts and to conduct a survey of symptom occurrence among sufferers in four countries.

Methods: The questionnaire was designed by integrating information gained from the vocabulary used by 38 upper GI symptom sufferers. There was no medical input to its development.

Plasma response to a varying degree of stress.

We report experimental evidence of a seamless transition between three distinct modes in a magnetized plasma with a transverse sheared flow as the ratio of the ion gyroradius to the shear scale length (a measure of shear magnitude) is varied. This was achieved using a dual plasma configuration in a laboratory experiment, where a sheared flow oriented perpendicular to a background magnetic field is localized at the boundary of the plasmas. This confirms the basic theory that plasma is unstable to transverse velocity shear in a broad frequency and wavelength range.

An alginate-antacid formulation localizes to the acid pocket to reduce acid reflux in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Background & Aims: Alginate rafts (polysaccharide polymers that precipitate into a low-density viscous gel when they contact gastric acid) have been reported to form at the acid pocket, an unbuffered pool of acid that floats on top of ingested food and causes postprandial acid reflux. We studied the location of an alginate formulation in relation to the acid pocket and the corresponding effects on reflux parameters and acid pocket positioning in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Methods: We randomly assigned patients with symptomatic GERD and large hiatal hernias to groups who were given either (111)In-labeled alginate-antacid (n = 8, Gaviscon Double Action Liquid) or antacid (n = 8, Antagel) after a standard meal.

Evaluation of an Innovative Over-the-Counter Treatment for Symptoms of Reflux Disease: Quick-Dissolving Alginate Granules.

Traditional antacids and alginate-based reflux suppressants are OTC products commonly used to treat reflux symptoms. There has been a lack of innovation of new formulations in this therapy area despite consumers finding established products unpalatable. Here we evaluate a novel product formulation which takes the form of quick-dissolving alginate granules in single-dose sachets (Gaviscon Direct Powder (GDP)).

Assessment of the Safety and Efficacy of a Raft-Forming Alginate Reflux Suppressant (Liquid Gaviscon) for the Treatment of Heartburn during Pregnancy.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER) and the symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation are common in pregnancy. These symptoms are transient and mostly resolve postpartum but have a negative impact on quality of life. Here, we present a prospective clinical evaluation of the safety and efficacy of an alginate raft-forming oral suspension that is licensed for use in pregnancy.

Evidence for a novel mechanism for gene amplification in multiple myeloma: 1q12 pericentromeric heterochromatin mediates breakage-fusion-bridge cycles of a 1q12 approximately 23 amplicon.

Gene amplification is defined as a copy number (CN) increase in a restricted region of a chromosome arm, and is a mechanism for acquired drug resistance and oncogene activation. In multiple myeloma (MM), high CNs of genes in a 1q12 approximately 23 amplicon have been associated with disease progression and poor prognosis. To investigate the mechanisms for gene amplification in this region in MM, we performed a comprehensive metaphase analysis combining G-banding, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and spectral karyotyping in 67 patients with gain of 1q.

Release of extraction-resistant mRNA in stationary phase Saccharomyces cerevisiae produces a massive increase in transcript abundance in response to stress.

Background: As carbon sources are exhausted, Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells exhibit reduced metabolic activity and cultures enter the stationary phase. We asked whether cells in stationary phase cultures respond to additional stress at the level of transcript abundance.

Results: Microarrays were used to quantify changes in transcript abundance in cells from stationary phase cultures in response to stress.

Experimental measurements of velocity dissipation and neutral-drag effects during the formation of a dusty plasma.

Stereoscopic particle image velocimety is used to make measurements of the formation of a dust cloud of 1.2 microm alumina particles in an argon dc glow discharge plasma. These measurements show a clear redistribution of particle velocities during the cloud formation process.

Cytogenetic studies of osteochondromas are scarce but have previously shown recurring clonal aberrations involving chromosome 8. We have studied a series of eight tumors and have found recurring aberrations not only involving chromosome 8, but also chromosome 1 in five of the seven abnormal tumors. Surprisingly, three of the chromosome 1 aberrations involved pericentric inversions.

Translocation (1;19)(q21;q13.3) is a recurrent reciprocal translocation in meningioma.

Benign meningiomas are characterized by a normal karyotype or loss of all or part of chromosome 22. Histologically higher grade tumors are typically characterized by a pattern of increasing chromosome loss and instability. This characteristic pattern of unbalanced chromosome aberrations is punctuated in the literature by several intriguing reports of a reciprocal t(1;19)(q21;q13.
