Introduction: We studied the determinants of carotid atherosclerosis in urban-dwelling Australian Aboriginals at high risk of atherosclerotic mortality and morbidity.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of self-selected adult Australian Aboriginals. Participants (n=602) aged 18-74 years had risk factor assessment and carotid ultrasound to determine carotid intima-medial thickness (IMT) and the presence of plaque.
Objective: To describe the results of a program for detecting high cardiovascular risk in an urban Aboriginal community.
Design: Cardiovascular risk assessment program conducted between January 1998 and October 1999. Participants completed a questionnaire and underwent a physical assessment and biochemical tests.
