Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is curriculum-based teaching and learning of various dimensions of sexuality. By equipping young people with accurate information on sexual and reproductive health, CSE promotes healthier populations and fosters a more informed workforce, contributing positively to national economies. Although known to have many benefits, CSE is not universally accepted or implemented.

Our study takes a novel approach, employing a fractional order framework to explore the influence of memory and control measures on transmission dynamics, thereby making a unique contribution to the field. The model is presented as a system of Caputo fractional differential equations capturing time constant controls.

Transitional Pain Service: Optimizing Complex Surgical Patients.

Purpose Of Review: The care of patients with complex postsurgical pain can be challenging and burdensome for the healthcare system. Transitional pain service (TPS) is a relatively new concept and has not been widely adopted in the USA. This article explores the benefits and barriers of transitional pain services and describes the development of a TPS at our institution.

Medical Physics Leadership Academy Journal Club (Leadership Club) program: Two-year review in building a community of leaders.

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine began the Medical Physics Leadership Academy Journal Club in the fall of 2020. The initiative was launched to provide a forum for medical physicists to learn about leadership topics using published material, discuss and reflect on the material, and consider incorporating the discussed skills into their professional practice. This report presents the framework for the MPLA Journal Club program, describes the lessons learned over the last 2 years, summarizes the data collected from attendees, and highlights the roadmap for the program moving forward.

Diode laser versus sclerotherapy: bloodless approaches in the treatment of oral pyogenic granuloma (randomised controlled clinical trial).

Oral pyogenic granuloma (PG) is traditionally treated by surgical excision which is associated with bleeding, pain and a high rate of recurrence. Our research aimed to clinically assess the effectiveness of diode laser versus sclerotherapy, as bloodless approach, in the treatment of oral PG. We randomly divided 20 patients with oral PG into two groups, with those in the test group being managed via diode laser application and those in the control group via injections of ethanolamine oleate as a sclerosing agent.

Two-point discrimination (TPD) testing and two-point estimation (TPE) methods are often used to determine tactile acuity, but their reliability is uncertain. Our aim in this study was to assess the reliability of TPD and TPE measurements in the same lumbar spine region of healthy young adults. The current status and shortcomings of stereotactic radiosurgery.

Background: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a common treatment for intracranial lesions. This work explores the state of SRS treatment delivery to characterize current treatment accuracy based on treatment parameters.

Methods: NCI clinical trials involving SRS rely on an end-to-end treatment delivery on a patient surrogate (credentialing phantom) from the Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core (IROC) to test their treatment accuracy.

Dietary Habits and Obesity among Adolescent School Children: A Case Control Study in an Urban Area of Kancheepuram District.

Background: Obesity is an important public health problem and is on the rise among adolescents in developed and developing nations. This case-control study was done to assess the dietary risk factors associated with obesity among school children of the adolescent age group.

Materials And Methods: This study was done among age-matched 110 cases and 110 controls who were adolescent children between ages 10 and 17 years.

Rifampicin-Resistant Tuberculosis in a Toddler: A Report of a Rare Paediatric Case in Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

The emergence of resistant strains of mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) to antituberculous drugs has compounded the management of the chronic infection. More than 90% of rifampicin (RIF)-resistant isolates are also isoniazid resistant; hence, rifampicin resistance (RR) is a surrogate marker for multidrug resistant TB (MDR-TB). Although there are limited reports of pediatric RR/MDR-TB in Nigeria, there had not been similar report in our hospital until now.

High-resolution microscopy through optically opaque media using ultrafast photoacoustics.

We present a high-resolution microscope capable of imaging buried structures through optically opaque materials with micrometer transverse resolution and a nanometer-scale depth sensitivity. The ability to image through such materials is made possible by the use of laser ultrasonic techniques, where an ultrafast laser pulse launches acoustic waves inside an opaque layer and subsequent acoustic echoes from buried interfaces are detected optically by a time-delayed probe pulse. We show that the high frequency of the generated ultrasound waves enables imaging with a transverse resolution only limited by the optical detection system.

Role of scattering by surface roughness in the photoacoustic detection of hidden micro-structures.

We present an experimental study in which we compare two different pump-probe setups to generate and detect high-frequency laser-induced ultrasound for the detection of gratings buried underneath optically opaque metal layers. One system is built around a high-fluence, low-repetition-rate femtosecond laser (1 kHz) and the other around a low-fluence, high-repetition-rate femtosecond laser (5.1 MHz).

Optimal Control of Shigellosis with Cost-Effective Strategies.

In this paper, we apply optimal control theory to the model for shigellosis. It is assumed that education campaign, sanitation, and treatment are the main controls for this disease. The aim is to minimize the number of infections resulting from contact with careers, infectious population, and contaminated environments while keeping the cost of associated controls minimum.

Laser-induced ultrasonics for detection of low-amplitude grating through metal layers with finite roughness.

We report on the use of laser-induced ultrasonics for the detection of gratings with amplitudes as small as 0.5 nm, buried underneath an optically opaque nickel layer. In our experiments, we use gratings fabricated on top of a nickel layer on glass, and we optically pump and probe the sample from the glass side.

Dose calculation errors as a component of failing IROC lung and spine phantom irradiations.

Purpose: Between July 2013 and August 2019, 22% of the imaging and radiation oncology core (IROC) spine, and 15% of the moving lung phantom irradiations have failed to meet established acceptability criteria. The spine phantom simulates a highly modulated stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) case, whereas the lung phantom represents a low-to-none modulation moving target case. In this study, we assessed the contribution of dose calculation errors to these phantom results and evaluated their effects on failure rates.

Differences in the Patterns of Failure Between IROC Lung and Spine Phantom Irradiations.

Purpose: Our purpose was to investigate and classify the reasons why institutions fail the Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core (IROC) stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) spine and moving lung phantoms, which are used to credential institutions for clinical trial participation.

Methods And Materials: All IROC moving lung and SBRT spine phantom irradiation failures recorded from January 2012 to December 2018 were evaluated in this study. A failure was a case where the institution did not meet the established IROC criteria for agreement between planned and delivered dose.

Global and mitosis-specific interobserver variation in mitotic count scoring and implications for malignant melanoma staging.

Aims: Staging is the gold standard for predicting malignant melanoma outcome but changes in its criteria over time indicate ongoing evolution. One notable recent change from the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging manual was removal of mitotic count. We explore the extent to which this feature is limited by interobserver error in order to find ways to improve its fitness for use should it be revisited in future staging versions.

Validity and sensitivity to change of laser Doppler imaging as a novel objective outcome measure for cutaneous lupus erythematosus.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess the reliability of a novel objective outcome measure, laser Doppler imaging (LDI), its validity against skin biopsy histology and other clinical instruments, including localized cutaneous lupus disease area and severity index (L-CLASI) and visual analogue scale (VAS) score of photographs, and its responsiveness to clinical change with therapy.

Methods: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted in 30 patients with active cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). At baseline and 3 months, disease activity was assessed using L-CLASI and a high resolution LDI system by two assessors.

Objective: When faced with clinical symptoms of scarring alopecia-the standard diagnostic pathway involves a scalp biopsy which is an invasive and expensive procedure. Standardization and automation of quality assurance for high-dose-rate brachytherapy planning with application programming interface.

Purpose: To standardize and automate the high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy planning quality assurance (QA) process utilizing scripting with application programming interface (API) in a commercially available treatment planning system (TPS).

Methods And Materials: Site- and applicator-dependent plan quality (PQ) evaluation criteria and plan integrity (PI) checklists were established based on published guidelines, clinical protocols, and institutional experience. User designed C# programs ("scripts") were created and executed through the API to access planning information in TPS.

A snapshot of medical physics practice patterns.

A large number of surveys have been sent to the medical physics community addressing many clinical topics for which the medical physicist is, or may be, responsible. Each survey provides an insight into clinical practice relevant to the medical physics community. The goal of this study was to create a summary of these surveys giving a snapshot of clinical practice patterns.

Detection of periodic structures through opaque metal layers by optical measurements of ultrafast electron dynamics.

We report on femtosecond optical pump-probe measurements of ultrafast electron dynamics to detect the presence of gratings buried underneath optically opaque gold layers. Electron energy diffusion and cooling are found to be strongly affected by the presence and type of metal buried below the gold layer. As a result, the spatially periodic buried grating is encoded on the electron temperature near the top surface, leading to a spatially periodic modulation of the optical properties near the gold surface from which a delayed probe pulse can be diffracted.
