Chemical pollution (including chemicals of emerging concern - CECs) continues to gain increasing attention as a global threat to human health and the environment, with numerous reports on the adverse and sometimes devastating effects upon ecosystems the presence of these chemicals can have. Whilst many studies have investigated presence of CECs in aquatic environments, these studies have been often focused on higher income countries, leaving significant knowledge gaps for many low-middle income countries. With increasing emergence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria (ARB) and the risk this poses to public health, there are growing concerns regarding water pollution contributing to the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through inadequate amenities and the rapid rate of urbanization. In this study, the impact of different anthropogenic factors on the prevalence of AMR in the urban water cycle in Stellenbosch, South Africa (SA) was examined. The etiology of obesity is complex and idiosyncratic-with inherited, behavioral, and environmental factors determining the age and rate at which excessive adiposity develops. Moreover, the etiologic status of an obese phenotype (how and when it developed initially) strongly influences both the short-term response to intervention and long-term health trajectories. Nevertheless, current management strategies tend to be 'one-size-fits-all' protocols that fail to anticipate the heterogeneity of response generated by the etiologic status of each individual's phenotype.

Antimicrobial agent (AA) usage, excretion, and persistence are all important factors in association with the occurrence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. This study evaluated the occurrence and fate of fourteen contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) at two South African wastewater treatment works (WWTW). Daily loads of the drug targets were calculated in the aqueous phase of influent- and effluent wastewater to evaluate their fate at the treatment works, along with population-normalised daily loads in raw influent wastewater to identify community-wide substance use patterns in the two study areas. Natural and synthetic steroid hormones and many persistent organic pollutants are of concern for their endocrine-disrupting activities observed in receiving surface waters. Apart from the demonstrated presence of estrogen- and estrogen-mimicking compounds in surface waters, antagonistic (anti-estrogenic) responses originating from wastewater effluent have been reported but are less known.
