Microalgae are promising sources of intracellular metabolites such as proteins, polysaccharides, pigments, and lipids. Thus, this study applied high-pressure homogenization (HPH) techniques on a pilot scale to disrupt the cells of Tetradesmus obliquus. The effects of pressure (P; 150, 250, and 350 bar), suspension concentration (Cs; 1.

This study evaluated conventional and alternative irrigation solutions combined with ultrasonic irrigant activation (UIA) against () and its endotoxin (LPS) in main root canal and dentinal tubules, using a new intratubular infection model. Seventy dentin cylinders were infected with for seven days under anaerobic conditions and treated with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), limewater + 2.

The formation of biofilms in the food industry poses significant economic, social, and public health challenges. Concurrently, mathematical models have emerged as promising tools for investigating microbial contamination and biofilm dynamics. This study evaluates the application of these models, highlighting their ability to identify critical parameters influencing microbial adhesion and to develop strategies for disrupting biofilm formation.

To deal with one of these challenges, chitosan (CHS)/carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) micropolyelectrolyte complexes (micro-PECs) were developed without the use of crosslinking agents to carry niacinamide, a model hydrophilic bioactive agent. A Box-Behnken design was used to study the effects of processing time (X = 60, 120 or 180 min), pH (X = 3, 4 or 5) and niacinamide concentration (X = 0.

Methods: This qualitative exploratory study was part of a cohort research project involving aGBMSM, travesties, and transgender women (aTrTW) using PrEP. Data analyzed consisted of 16 interviews with aGBMSM and eight with health professionals (HPs) in São Paulo study site.
Tropical regions have provided new insights into how ecological communities are assembled. In dry coastal communities, water stress has been hypothesized to determine plant assembly structure by favoring preadapted lineages from neighboring ecosystems, consistent with functional clustering. However, it is unclear whether this hypothesis is sufficient to explain how coastal communities in tropical ecosystems are assembled.

Background: The CTNS gene mutation causes infantile nephropathic cystinosis (INC). Patients with INC develop Fanconi syndrome and chronic kidney disease (CKD) with significant bone deformations. C57BL/6 Ctns mice are an animal model for studying INC.

Land-use expansion is linked to major sustainability concerns including climate change, food security and biodiversity loss. This expansion is largely concentrated in so-called 'frontiers', defined here as places experiencing marked transformations owing to rapid resource exploitation. Understanding the mechanisms shaping these frontiers is crucial for sustainability.

Studies highlight oral issues, like ulcers, blisters, and white patches, alongside olfactory and gustatory dysfunction, influencing an individual's quality of life. In this context, our study aimed to assess the frequency of oral lesions, olfactory and gustatory disorders, and xerostomia resulting from COVID-19.

The aim of this study was to validate a novel medical virtual reality (VR) platform used for medical image segmentation and contouring in radiation oncology and 3D anatomical modeling and simulation for planning medical interventions, including surgery. The first step of the validation was to verify quantitatively and qualitatively that the VR platform can produce substantially equivalent 3D anatomical models, image contours, and measurements to those generated with existing commercial platforms. To achieve this, a total of eight image sets and 18 structures were segmented using both VR and reference commercial platforms.

Background: The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 and seasonal viruses in adults hospitalized with severe acute respiratory infection during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: This population-based cohort study included patients aged >18 years hospitalized for severe acute respiratory infection in Brazil between February 2020 and February 2023.
Background And Purpose: Previous studies have suggested that patients experiencing an in-hospital stroke may face delays in treatment and worse outcomes compared with patients with community-onset strokes. However, most studies occurred when IV thrombolysis was the primary treatment. This study aimed to examine the outcomes of patients experiencing an in-hospital stroke in the endovascular thrombectomy era.

It was widely used in Brazil to assist in postmortem diagnoses and investigate excess mortality during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aimed to determine the accuracy of investigating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) using VA.

Long-term complications of SRS are not fully understood, with several cases of malignant transformation reported in the literature. We report the case of a 50-year-old female with no prior history of neurofibromatosis who presented in 2013 with MRI evidence of a benign vestibular schwannoma.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study used a Brazilian database called the Sistema de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe (Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance System) to analyze patients aged = 18 years who were hospitalized with Covid-19 between 2020 and 2022. The exposure of interest was mental disorders (anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder) identified through self-report.
Background And Objectives: We aimed to analyze the study designs, modeling approaches, and performance evaluation metrics in studies using machine learning techniques to develop clinical prediction models for children and adolescents with COVID-19.
Methods: We searched four databases for articles published between 01/01/2020 and 10/25/2023, describing the development of multivariable prediction models using any machine learning technique for predicting several outcomes in children and adolescents who had COVID-19.
Results: We included ten articles, six (60 % [95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.

The interactions between plants, beneficial bacteria and their environment are profoundly shaped by various environmental factors, including light, temperature, water availability, and soil quality. Despite efforts to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in the association between plants and beneficial bacteria, like Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria (PGPB), with many studies focusing on the transcriptional reprogramming in the plant, there is no report on the modulation of genetic controls from both plant and associated bacteria standpoints, in response to environment. The main goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between plant-bacteria-environment signaling, using as a model maize plants inoculated with ZAE94 and cultivated with different doses of N (0.

Background: In hematologic cancers, including leukemia, cells depend on amino acids for rapid growth. Anti-metabolites that prevent their synthesis or promote their degradation are considered potential cancer treatment agents. Amino acid deprivation triggers proliferation inhibition, autophagy, and programmed cell death.
