Flavonoids are a group of natural compounds that have been described in the literature as having anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective compounds. Although they are considered versatile molecules, little has been discussed about their antiviral activities for neurotropic viruses. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate the pharmacological potential of flavonoids in the face of viruses that can affect the central nervous system (CNS).

Article Synopsis
  • Jatropha curcas L. (known as "Pinhão Manso") is a medicinal plant with potential antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly relevant in treating neuroinflammatory conditions.
  • This study explored the anti-inflammatory effects of a methanolic extract from J. curcas leaves on glial cells from neonate Wistar rats, showing that it did not harm cell viability even at high concentrations.
  • The extract significantly inhibited inflammatory responses in glial cells induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), reducing morphological changes and the expression of inflammatory markers like GFAP, Iba1, and NF-kB, while also decreasing nitric oxide production.

Purpose: Flavonoids are a group of secondary metabolites of the polyphenols class present in several plant species. Among them, the biflavonoid agathisflavone is of interest since it bears several biological effects that include: antiviral, antitumoral, antiprotozoal and neurogenic actions. In this sense, this study aims to use the important tool of scientific prospecting to assess the level of research development concerning the flavonoid agathisflavone.
