Development of a Diagnostic Biosensor Method of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis towards a Point-of-Care Biosensor.

In spite of a current increasing trend in the development of miniaturized, standalone point-of-care (PoC) biosensing platforms in the literature, the actual implementation of such systems in the field is far from being a reality although deeply needed. In the particular case of the population screenings for local or regional diseases related to specific pathogens, the diagnosis of the presence of specific antibodies could drastically modify therapies and even the organization of public policies. The aim of this work was to develop a fast, cost-effective detection method based on the manipulation of functionalized magnetic beads for an efficient diagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), looking for the presence of anti-pigeon antigen antibodies (APAA) in a patient's serum.

Risk factors associated with the development of interstitial lung abnormalities.

Background: Around 8-10% of individuals over 50 years of age present interstitial lung abnormalities (ILAs), but their risk factors are uncertain.

Methods: From 817 individuals recruited in our lung ageing programme at the Mexican National Institute of Respiratory Diseases, 80 (9.7%) showed ILAs and were compared with 564 individuals of the same cohort with normal high-resolution computed tomography to evaluate demographic and functional differences, and with 80 individuals randomly selected from the same cohort for biomarkers.

MAlO (M=Ba, Mg) photocatalytic activity dependence on annealing atmosphere.

Aluminate spinel type ${{\rm MAl}_2}{{\rm O}_4}$MAlO (M=Ba or Mg) materials prepared using the combustion synthesis method were annealed either in an air or carbon atmosphere. The materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectra, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Their photocatalytic activity was evaluated for the dye degradation and hydrogen evolution.

Evaluation of Renin and Soluble (Pro)renin Receptor in Patients with IPF. A Comparison with Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.

Introduction: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a lethal disease with an unclear pathogenic mechanism. Components of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) have a role in the pathogenesis of IPF, specifically, the aspartyl protease renin acts as a profibrotic factor in the lung. However, the concentration of the RAS components renin and soluble (pro)renin receptor (sPRR) have not been previously evaluated neither in serum nor in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) of patients with IPF or chronic Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (cHP), a disease which may be confused with IPF.

The Role of ADAR1 and ADAR2 in the Regulation of miRNA-21 in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Introduction: microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding 1RNAs that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression. Recent evidence shows that adenosine deaminases that act on RNA (ADAR) can edit miRNAs. miRNAs are involved in the development of different diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Increased Expression of CC16 in Patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a devastating disease of unknown etiology. The pathogenic mechanisms are unclear, but evidence indicates that aberrantly activated alveolar epithelial cells secrete a variety of mediators which induce the migration, proliferation and activation of fibroblasts and finally the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix with the consequent destruction of the lung parenchyma. CC16 (approved symbol SCGB1A1), a putative anti-inflammatory protein produced by "club" cells in the distal airways, has not been evaluated in IPF lungs.

Profibrosing effect of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors in human lung fibroblasts.

Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the effect of two angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) (Enalapril and Captopril), an angiotensin-II receptor inhibitor (Losartan) and a renin inhibitor (Aliskiren) on renin, TGF-β1 and collagen expressions in human lung fibroblast cultures through real-time PCR and ELISA.

Materials And Methods: Normal commercial fibroblasts (CCD25) were exposed to 10(-6) M of enalapril, captopril, losartan, or aliskiren for 6 h. Subsequently, media were recovered and proteins were concentrated; RNA was extracted from the cells.

Selective modulation of nociceptive processing due to noise distraction.

This study investigates the effects of noise distraction on the different components and sources of laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) whilst attending to either the spatial component (localisation performance task) or the affective component (unpleasantness rating task) of pain. LEPs elicited by CO2 laser stimulation of the right forearm were recorded from 64 electrodes in 18 consenting healthy volunteers. Subjects reported either pain location or unpleasantness, in the presence and absence of distraction by continuous 85 dBa white noise.

Multichannel matching pursuit and EEG inverse solutions.
