This study evaluated the scientific contribution of Brazilian CNPq Research Productivity fellows (PQ) in Dentistry by areas of activity. This cross-sectional study included 217 active PQ who were grouped into six groups: (1) Biomaterials, Prosthodontics, and Restorative Dentistry; (2) Public Health and Epidemiology; (3) Oral Pathology, Stomatology, and Dental Radiology; (4) Pediatric Dentistry and Child Health; (5) Dental Clinic (Periodontics, Endodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, and Implantology), and (6) Basic Areas (Histology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Microbiology, Immunology, and Pharmacology). While beliefs aid individuals in interpreting the surrounding world, overly rigid and inflexible beliefs can constrain the individual's ability to process available information.

Objective: describe the process of translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Mayo High Performance Team Scale into Brazilian Portuguese.

Method: descriptive study of validation and cross-cultural adaptation of the scale, carried out virtually, following assumptions proposed by Beaton and collaborators. It had a sample of 40 experts, and carried out two rounds, one for validation and one for final assessment.

Biodosimetry can define risks in inhabitants of areas with potential contaminants, ensuring environmental protection and living conditions due to toxic and radioactive effects. This study aimed to evaluate metals and radionuclides in dental structures and alveolar bones in residents of a uranium area in Paraíba and Pernambuco, Brazil. Eighty-nine specimens were pulverized, fractionated, and chemically prepared for analysis by EDXRF, FAAS, and ICP-MS.

Epithelial Membrane Protein 2 (EMP2) Blockade Attenuates Pathological Neovascularization in Murine Oxygen-Induced Retinopathy.

Purpose: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) results from postnatal hyperoxia exposure in premature infants and is characterized by aberrant neovascularization of retinal blood vessels. Epithelial membrane protein-2 (EMP2) regulates hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-induced vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production in the ARPE-19 cell line and genetic knock-out of Emp2 in a murine oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) model attenuates neovascularization. We hypothesize that EMP2 blockade via intravitreal injection protects against neovascularization.

The present study aims to quantify total collagen, collagen I (Col I) and collagen III (Col III), analyze the alignment of collagen fibers and assess the basement membrane integrity in samples from patients with metastatic and non-metastatic prostate cancer. Paraoxonase 2 Deficiency Causes Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells and Retinal Degeneration in Mice.

Although AMD is a complex disease, oxidative stress is a crucial contributor to its development, especially in view of the higher oxygen demand of the retina. Paraoxonase 2 (PON2) is a ubiquitously and constitutively expressed antioxidant protein that is found intracellularly associated with mitochondrial membranes and modulates mitochondrial ROS production and function. The contribution of PON2 to AMD has not been studied to date.

Background: Brazil has been dramatically hit by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and is a world leader in COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. Additionally, the largest country of Latin America has been a continuous source of SARS-CoV-2 variants and shows extraordinary variability of the pandemic strains probably related to the country´s outstanding position as a Latin American economical and transportation hub. Not all regions of the country show sufficient infrastructure for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis and genotyping which can negatively impact the pandemic response.

Community intervention programs for sex offenders: A systematic review.

Sexual violence is a phenomenon that negatively impacts the victims' physical and psychological health and well-being. Sex offenders tend not to take responsibility for their actions, have difficulties in emotion regulation and impulse control, paraphilias or other disorders, so they are a difficult group to treat. In addition, the available psychological treatment programs tend to have inconsistent and, sometimes, undesirable results.

Anatomy and Imaging of Accessory Liver Lobes: What Radiologists Should Know.

Although the liver may present a range of congenital anomalies, often involving shape irregularities or the number of lobules, less common variations include the presence of accessory liver lobes (ALL), consisting of a supernumerary lobe of normal hepatic parenchyma in continuity with the liver. This paper reviews the embryology, frequency, anatomy, and types of ALL. Furthermore, we describe computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings in a range of such cases, including those simulating disease or presenting with complications.

It is applied to openly available data from the beginning of the epidemic in 2020 to the present day (august 2022). We analyzed the spatio-temporal patterns of the spread of SARS-CoV2 throughout the country, applying Bayesian inference to estimate population prevalence and hospitalization ratio.

Influx of radioactive gas in norm occurrences in Northeastern Brazil.

Radon and progeny are potentially relevant in radioecological studies, as they contribute more than half of the exposure to environmental radiation. The investigation of Rn in internal environments of municipalities of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil was carried out using passive dosimetry with α Espec-222, installed in environments selected by the history of natural radiative occurrences. The monitoring time was eight months to consider seasonal influence.

Lethal destructive sinusopathy due to amphotericin B-resistant Aspergillus flavus: A case report.

Background: The prevalence of pulmonary aspergillosis and the importance of its early diagnosis are recognized. However, non-pulmonary involvement, including the sinuses region, is not frequently reported, and an infection in this area can affect all paranasal sinuses (pansinusopathy), being a rare pathology that affects immunocompromised hosts. Recent studies have highlighted the occurrence of Aspergillus flavus resistant to antifungal therapy.

Vaginal cancer often poses a challenge for clinical and radiological diagnosis, and its risk factors, progression, and treatment are still poorly established. Although vaginal malignancies are rare, even globally, their rates have increased due to the increased access to healthcare and the evolution of screening measures and diagnostic methods. Because the vaginal cavity is a virtual space, it can harbor lesions that often go unnoticed and, not infrequently, diagnosed belatedly.

Thermal sensation index for elderly people living in Brazil.

With the aging of the human body, some physiological changes occur, compromising thermoregulatory mechanisms, negatively influencing the individual's thermal sensation. Given this fact, the present study aimed to build a predictive model to determine the thermal sensation index for elderly people (TSIEP) in a hot climate region, considering their sensitivity in the perception of climate change in the city of Campina Grande, in the semi-arid region of Paraíba/Brazil. For this purpose, an observational study was carried out from April to December 2016 with elderly people inside their homes.

Toxoplasma gondii infection impairs the colonic motility of rats due to loss of myenteric neurons.

Background: Toxoplasma gondii infection causes intestinal inflammation and diarrhea indicating possible intestinal motor dysfunction. Anatomical studies have shown alterations in the colonic myenteric plexus, but it is unknown whether this impacts motility and therefore whether motility is a target for treatment. We determined whether colonic coordinated movements are compromised by toxoplasmic infection and how it is associated with anatomical changes.
