Two isomeric β-vinylpyridinium porphyrins, 2-[2-(2-methylpyridinium)vinyl]-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (1, ortho isomer) and 2-[2-(4-methylpyridinium)vinyl]-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (2, para isomer), which have shown different photodynamic behavior were investigated in organic solvents and sodium 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles. In organic systems, the absorption spectra present a red-shifted band that is more intense in the para isomer, in addition to the usual Soret band. This new band presents interesting solvatochromic effects which obey the multiparametric Kamlet-Taft equation.

At non-cytotoxic concentrations the studied compounds show significant antiviral activity after photoactivation. Novel cationic porphyrin derivatives having a galactose or a bis(isopropylidene)galactose unit linked directly to a pyridine or to an aminophenyl group were characterized by electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). The electrospray mass spectra (ESI-MS) show the M(+) ions, since these porphyrins are already monocharged in solution. The fragmentation of these ions under ESI-MS/MS conditions was studied and it was found that elimination of the sugar residue as a radical (-163 or -243 Da) is a common fragmentation pathway.

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) have been used to differentiate the 2- and 4-methylpyridyl isomers of free-base and metallated cationic beta-vinylpyridylporphyrins. The analysis by ESI-MS/MS of the deuterated analogs and semiempirical calculations of structural and electronic parameters were also undertaken. The two free-base isomers are easily differentiated by ESI-MS/MS but the presence of a metallic center renders differentiation of the metallated isomers less effective.

Two novel compounds were tested in vitro for their antiviral photoactivity against herpes simplex virus type 1.
