Graphene is a class of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials composed of single or multiple layers of carbon atoms. To date, there are limited clinical data and no epidemiological research available to assess graphene toxicity in humans. Despite the growing amount of animal toxicity data, there are currently no occupational exposure limits (OELs) for any type of graphene nanomaterial published by international authoritative organizations to ensure their safe handling within workplaces.

On-surface synthesis of functional molecular structures provides a route to the fabrication of materials tailored to exhibit bespoke catalytic, (opto)electronic, and magnetic properties. The fabrication of graphene nanoribbons via on-surface synthesis, where reactive precursor molecules are combined to form extended polymeric structures, provides quasi-1D graphitic wires that can be doped by tuning the properties/composition of the precursor molecules. Here, we combine the atomic precision of solution-phase synthetic chemistry with on-surface protocols to enable reaction steps that cannot yet be achieved in solution.

Article Synopsis
  • Sparse data bias is an issue in data analysis, especially for rare binary outcomes, and while a two-step meta-analysis can help, it doesn't fully eliminate bias in effect estimation.
  • The authors propose a new algorithm called ODAP-B, which utilizes modified Poisson regression to estimate relative risk more accurately and efficiently than traditional methods.
  • Evaluations through simulations and real-world data reveal that ODAP-B provides closer effect estimates and is more privacy-preserving since it only requires aggregated data.

Objective: Patients who undergo interhospital transfer, particularly for intensive care unit (ICU) care, experience greater length of stay and mortality. There is evidence that patients transferred for surgical ICU care experience higher mortality rates; however, differences in length of stay or mortality across other ICU types remain unclear. The goals of this work were to assess how length of stay and mortality differ by ICU subspecialties.

Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is emerging as a potential biomarker in early-stage urothelial cancer, but its utility in metastatic disease remains unknown. In the phase 3 KEYNOTE-361 study, pembrolizumab with and without chemotherapy was compared with chemotherapy alone in patients with metastatic urothelial cancer. The study did not meet prespecified efficacy thresholds for statistical significance.

Objectives: Racial disparities in kidney transplant access and posttransplant outcomes exist between non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and non-Hispanic White (NHW) patients in the United States, with the site of care being a key contributor. Using multi-site data to examine the effect of site of care on racial disparities, the key challenge is the dilemma in sharing patient-level data due to regulations for protecting patients' privacy.

Materials And Methods: We developed a federated learning framework, named dGEM-disparity (decentralized algorithm for Generalized linear mixed Effect Model for disparity quantification).

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), nanometre-wide strips of graphene, are promising materials for fabricating electronic devices. Many GNRs have been reported, yet no scalable strategies are known for synthesizing GNRs with metal atoms and heteroaromatic units at precisely defined positions in the conjugated backbone, which would be valuable for tuning their optical, electronic and magnetic properties. Here we report the solution-phase synthesis of a porphyrin-fused graphene nanoribbon (PGNR).

Background: Non-graftable or composite defect reconstruction represents a major challenge to the reconstructive surgeon, with many wounds requiring local flap or free microvascular tissue transfer approaches. The recent advent of synthetic skin substitutes such as Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix (BTM) have revolutionized the management of complex defects including those caused by burns, trauma and infection, with low-morbidity and low-complexity surgery. However, limited data exist supporting their use in cancer reconstruction in Australia.

Strained macrocycles display interesting properties, such as conformational rigidity, often resulting in enhanced π-conjugation or enhanced affinity for non-covalent guest binding, yet they can be difficult to synthesize. Here we use computational modeling to design a template to direct the formation of an 18-porphyrin nanoring with direct meso-meso bonds between the porphyrin units. Coupling of a linear 18-porphyrin oligomer in the presence of this template gives the target nanoring, together with an unexpected 36-porphyrin ring by-product.

Background: The clinical diagnosis of manifest Huntington's disease (HD) relies on a high level of clinical confidence (99% confidence) of HD-consistent motor signs. Longitudinal data have reliably identified cognitive and behavioral dysfunction predating clinical motor diagnosis by up to 15 years. Reliance on motor signs to establish a diagnosis of HD increases risk of early misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis.

Objective: This prespecified exploratory analysis evaluated the association of gene expression signatures, tumor mutational burden (TMB), and multiplex immunohistochemistry (mIHC) tumor microenvironment-associated cell phenotypes with clinical outcomes of pembrolizumab in advanced recurrent ovarian cancer (ROC) from the phase II KEYNOTE-100 study.

Methods: Pembrolizumab-treated patients with evaluable RNA-sequencing (n = 317), whole exome sequencing (n = 293), or select mIHC (n = 125) data were evaluated. The association between outcomes (objective response rate [ORR], progression-free survival [PFS], and overall survival [OS]) and gene expression signatures (T-cell-inflamed gene expression profile [TcellGEP] and 10 non-TcellGEP signatures), TMB, and prespecified mIHC cell phenotype densities as continuous variables was evaluated using logistic (ORR) and Cox proportional hazards regression (PFS; OS).

Neuropsychological evaluation is critical to detection and management of cognitive and neuropsychiatric changes associated with Huntington disease (HD). Accurate assessment of non-motor complications of HD is critical given the prominent impact on functional disability, frequently commensurate with or exceeding that of motor symptoms. The increasing emphasis on developing disease-modifying therapies targeting cognitive decline in HD requires consensus on clinical neuropsychological assessment methods.

is a multi-drug resistant human fungal pathogen that has become a global threat to human health due to its drug resistant phenotype, persistence in the hospital environment and propensity for patient to patient spread. Isolates display variable aggregation that may affect the relative virulence of strains. Therefore, dissection of this phenotype has gained substantial interest in recent years.

Intensive Care Unit staff deal with potentially traumatic cases throughout their careers. We designed and implemented a 'Team Immediate Meet' (TIM) tool, a communication aid designed to facilitate a two-minute 'hot debrief' after a critical event, provide the team with information about the normal reaction to such an event and signpost staff to strategies to help support their colleagues (and themselves). We describe our TIM tool awareness campaign, quality improvement project and subsequent feedback from staff who reported that the tool would be useful for navigating the aftermath of potentially traumatic events and could be transferable to other ICUs.

The objective was to compare clinical protection [evaluated through health scoring, endoscopy score of the upper respiratory tract (URT-ES), leukocyte count, viremia, and virus shedding in nasal secretions] following Bovine viral diarrhea virus 2 (BVDV2) and Bovine herpes virus 1 (BHV1) challenge among calves submitted to modified-live virus (MLV) booster vaccination (either intranasal or subcutaneous) concurrent with injectable trace minerals (ITM) or saline. Forty-eight dairy calves received an MLV intranasal (IN) vaccine containing BHV1, BRSV, and BPIV and subcutaneous (SC) ITM (Se, Cu, Zn & Mn; ITM, n = 24) or saline (SAL, n = 24). Ten weeks later, calves received a second dose of ITM, or saline, according to previous groups and were randomly assigned to receive the same IN vaccine [ITM-IN (n = 12), SAL-IN (n = 12)] or a SC MLV vaccine containing BHV1, BRSV, BPI3V, BVDV1 & 2 [ITM-SC (n = 12), SAL-SC (n = 12)].

Molecular diffusion is a fundamental process underpinning surface-confined molecular self-assembly and synthesis. Substrate topography influences molecular assembly, alignment, and reactions with the relationship between topography and diffusion linked to the thermodynamic evolution of such processes. Here, we observe preferential adsorption sites for tetraphenylporphyrin (2H-TPP) on Au(111) and interpret nucleation and growth of molecular islands at these sites in terms of spatial variation in diffusion barrier driven by local atomic arrangements of the Au(111) surface (the 22× √3 "herringbone" reconstruction).

Integrating real-world data (RWD) from several clinical sites offers great opportunities to improve estimation with a more general population compared to analyses based on a single clinical site. However, sharing patient-level data across sites is practically challenging due to concerns about maintaining patient privacy. We develop a distributed algorithm to integrate heterogeneous RWD from multiple clinical sites without sharing patient-level data.
