Palm olein (PO) and olive oil (OO) are widely consumed in the world. PO is considered harmful to health, whereas OO is considered healthy. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of consumption of these oils on antioxidant status and inflammation in rats.

These oils should not be confused with the solid palm stearin which is widely used in pastry making. Large number of studies was reported dealing with adverse/beneficial cardiovascular effects of PO and OO, whereas few studies were conducted to compare their potential effects on hepatic steatosis and liver lipid metabolism.

DHA is associated with a lower atherosclerosis risk, suggesting a beneficial role in cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of DHA peroxidation on its potentially antiarrhythmic properties (AAP) in isolated ventricular cardiomyocytes and in vivo in post-myocardial infarcted mice.

Metabolites of non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids notably omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have become important biomarkers of lipid products. Especially the arachidonic acid-derived F2-isoprostanes are the classic in vivo biomarker for oxidative stress in biological systems. In recent years other isoprostanes from eicosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic, adrenic and α-linolenic acids have been evaluated, namely F3-isoprostanes, F4-neuroprostanes, F2-dihomo-isoprostanes and F1-phytoprostanes, respectively.

ENL is estrogenic with no effect on the E-screen test and is a natural Selected Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) with health interests that have to be checked in clinical studies with bioavailability assessment. Two haptens of ENL were synthesized, with a spacer arm at the C5 position having either 2 or 4 carbon atoms (ENLΔ2 and ENLΔ4, respectively).

However, COPD peripheral muscle function and structure show great heterogeneity, overlapping those in sedentary healthy subjects (SHS). While discrepancies in the link between muscle structure and phenotype remain unexplained, we tested whether the fiber CSA and the type I fiber reductions were the attributes of different phenotypes of the disease, using unsupervised clustering method and post hoc validation.

Isoprostanes (IsoPs) and neuroprostanes (NeuroPs) are formed in vivo by a free radical non-enzymatic mechanism involving peroxidation of arachidonic acid (AA, C20:4 n-6) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3) respectively. This review summarises our research in the total synthesis of these lipid metabolites, as well as their biological activities and their utility as biomarkers of oxidative stress in humans.

The key steps included the preparation of the Freïmanis (+/-)-hydroxycyclopentenone 5, enzymatic resolution of this racemic hydroxycyclopentenone, Wittig and Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) coupling reactions and finally enantioselective reductions.
