Background: Antimicrobial use data from inpatients in northern Canada suitable to inform stewardship programs are limited.

Objective: As a special project of the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program, to describe antimicrobial use for inpatients in northern Canadian acute care hospitals.

Methods: Participating acute care hospitals serving adult or mixed adult and pediatric populations in northern Canada submitted annual data on the use of all systemic antimicrobials from 2019 to 2021.

Purpose: Free and charitable clinics (FCCs), nonprofits that utilize volunteer licensed health care professionals to provide health services at no cost or a small fee to low-income uninsured patients who are disproportionately from underrepresented communities, have been part of the safety net for over a century. Approximately 1400 known FCCs serve two million patients annually. Despite their longevity and sizable number, evidence regarding the quality of care in FCCs is lacking.

To obtain some exploratory, qualitative data on ethical issues and values in managing a research laboratory, we conducted three focus groups with experienced investigators and laboratory managers. After validating the focus group transcripts for accuracy, two coders used deductive and inductive coding to develop themes from the text. Participants regarded ethics as important in managing a laboratory (or research group) for various reasons, ranging from conducting research with integrity to exhibiting leadership and promoting an ethical research climate.

Objective: To report the use of alteplase for catheter clearance in a neonate of 27 weeks' gestation at day 50 of life.

Setting: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Naval Medical Center.

Case Summary: At day 50 of life, a neonate boy of 27 weeks' gestation had a clotted peripherally inserted central catheter line.
