The influence of potassium on folding parameters of porcine kidney betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase.

Porcine kidney betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (pkBADH) uses NAD as a coenzyme to convert betaine aldehyde to glycine betaine. In previous studies we described the impact of potassium on the affinity of pkBADH for NAD, the effect on the tertiary and secondary structure, and changes in the flexibility of the amino acids involved in the formation of the pkBADH-NAD. However, there are still unanswered questions about how K influences the folding and maintenance of the quaternary structure.

Gold Nanorods with Mesoporous Silica Shell: A Promising Platform for Cisplatin Delivery.

The versatile combination of metal nanoparticles with chemotherapy agents makes designing multifunctional drug delivery systems attractive. In this work, we reported cisplatin's encapsulation and release profile using a mesoporous silica-coated gold nanorods system. Gold nanorods were synthesized by an acidic seed-mediated method in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactant, and the silica-coated state was obtained by modified Stöber method.

L. is a tropical tree that is used in traditional medicine around the world. The high content of flavonoid, alkaloid, acetogenin, phenolic and lipophilic compounds of this tropical tree forms the basis of its traditional medical uses.

Herbicide biomonitoring in agricultural workers in Valle del Mayo, Sonora Mexico.

Valle del Mayo is an important agricultural area at the northwest of Mexico where up to 20,000 L of a mix composed of glyphosate and tordon is used in drains and canals. This study was carried out in order to evaluate the cellular damage caused by glyphosate, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), and picloram in agricultural workers. Biomonitoring was performed through the quantification of herbicides in urine using HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) to then evaluate the cellular damage in exposed people by means of an evaluation of micronuclei and cellular proliferation in lymphocyte cultures.

Silencing of HIF-1 in WSSV-infected white shrimp: Effect on viral load and antioxidant enzymes.

Hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) is a transcriptional factor that induces genes involved in glucose metabolism. HIF-1 is formed by a regulatory α-subunit (HIF-1α) and a constitutive β-subunit (HIF-1β). The white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) induces a shift in glucose metabolism and oxidative stress.

Pregnancy differentially regulates the collagens types I and III in left ventricle from rat heart.

The pathologic cardiac remodeling has been widely documented; however, the physiological cardiac remodeling induced by pregnancy and its reversion in postpartum are poorly understood. In the present study we investigated the changes in collagen I (Col I) and collagen III (Col III) mRNA and protein levels in left ventricle from rat heart during pregnancy and postpartum. Col I and Col III mRNA expression in left ventricle samples during pregnancy and postpartum were analyzed by using quantitative PCR.

Biophysical characterization of the non-fusogenic interaction between liposomes and the shrimp bifunctional lipoprotein-beta-glucan binding protein HDL/BGBP.

Shrimp High Density Lipoprotein-beta-Glucan Binding Protein (HDL/BGBP) has been studied by its role in nutrition and innate defense. Although the mechanisms of lipid loading are still unknown, HDL-BGBP binds and aggregates phospholipids vesicles in vitro. To gain insights into the HDL-BGBP mechanism of interaction with membranes, we have used fluorescence spectroscopy and electron microscopy.
