Polyolefins, including high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and isotactic polypropylene (iPP), account for over half of the worldwide plastics market and have wide-ranging applications. Recycling of these materials is hindered due to separation difficulties as co-mingled blends of HDPE and iPP often exhibit brittle mechanical behavior because phase separated domains detach under stress due to low interfacial adhesion. Motivated to improve mechanical properties of mixed recyclates during processing, this work examines the effect of shear on the crystallization kinetics and rheological properties of HDPE-iPP blends utilizing a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheo-Raman spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Landscape drying associated with permafrost thaw is expected to enhance microbial methane oxidation in arctic soils. Here we show that ice-rich, Yedoma permafrost deposits, comprising a disproportionately large fraction of pan-arctic soil carbon, present an alternate trajectory. Field and laboratory observations indicate that talik (perennially thawed soils in permafrost) development in unsaturated Yedoma uplands leads to unexpectedly large methane emissions (35-78 mg m d summer, 150-180 mg m d winter).

Kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), also known as T-cell Ig and mucin domain-1 (TIM-1), is a widely recognized biomarker for AKI, but its biological function is less appreciated. KIM-1/TIM-1 belongs to the T-cell Ig and mucin domain family of conserved transmembrane proteins, which bear the characteristic six-cysteine Ig-like variable domain. The latter enables binding of KIM-1/TIM-1 to its natural ligand, phosphatidylserine, expressed on the surface of apoptotic cells and necrotic cells.

Permafrost degradation in peatlands is altering vegetation and soil properties and impacting net carbon storage. We studied four adjacent sites in Alaska with varied permafrost regimes, including a black spruce forest on a peat plateau with permafrost, two collapse scar bogs of different ages formed following thermokarst, and a rich fen without permafrost. Measurements included year-round eddy covariance estimates of net carbon dioxide (CO ), mid-April to October methane (CH ) emissions, and environmental variables.

Of those infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), ~ 10% develop the chronic post-viral debilitating condition, long COVID (LC). Although LC is a heterogeneous condition, about half of cases have typical post-viral fatigue with onset and symptoms that are very similar to myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Clavicle fractures are a common injury resulting from a high-energy force, such as a fall onto the shoulder, motor vehicle accident, or sporting activity. Although some clavicle fractures may be treated nonoperatively, operative treatment results in higher union rates and faster return to activity. Meniscus allograft transplantation (MAT) has been shown to be a feasible surgical option for younger patients, below 50 years of age who have meniscal insufficiency and have failed conservative treatment measures. In this technical note, we describe a procedure of harvesting and injecting bone marrow aspirate concentrate in a meniscus allograft during a MAT procedure, which may allow for longer lasting transplants and improve patient outcomes. In this technical note, bone marrow aspirate concentrate is harvested arthroscopically from the intercondylar notch at the surgical site, which prevents additional donor site morbidity, as seen with harvesting from other locations, such as the iliac crest.

In evaluating the clinical benefit of new therapeutic interventions, it is critical that the treatment outcomes assessed reflect aspects of health that are clinically important and meaningful to patients. Performance outcome (PerfO) assessments are measurements based on standardized tasks actively undertaken by a patient that reflect physical, cognitive, sensory, and other functional skills that bring meaning to people's lives. PerfO assessments can have substantial value as drug development tools when the concepts of interest being measured best suit task performance and in cases where patients may be limited in their capacity for self-report.

Advances in regional anesthesia techniques for knee surgery have led to drastic improvements in postoperative pain control and have reduced reliance on perioperative opioid analgesics. The infiltration between the popliteal artery and capsule of the knee (IPACK) block has been a useful tool for providing posterior knee analgesia as an adjuvant to traditional femoral or adductor canal blocks in knee surgery. We present a simple and reproducible technique for the arthroscopic administration of this block.
