When using the reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) technique for quantitative assessment of microRNA (miRNA) expression, normalizing data using a stable endogenous gene is essential; however, no universally adequate reference gene exists. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine, via the RNA-Seq technique, the most adequate endogenous normalizer for the expression assessment of plasma miRNAs in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Two massive sequencing procedures were performed (a) to identify differentially expressed miRNAs between patients with COVID-19 and healthy volunteers (n = 12), and (b) to identify differentially expressed miRNAs between patients with severe COVID-19 and those with mild COVID-19 (n = 8).

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recent research has demonstrated how epigenetic mechanisms regulate the host-virus interactions in COVID-19. It has also shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) are one of the three fundamental mechanisms of the epigenetic regulation of gene expression and play an important role in viral infections.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to verify the association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in vitamin D-related genes and the severity or mortality of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). We systematically searched PubMed, BVS/Bireme, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science for relevant studies published until November 24, 2023. Twelve studies were included.

Radiotherapy and cisplatin lead to cell killing in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients, but adverse events and response to treatment are not the same in patients with similar clinicopathological aspects. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the roles of c.215G > C, c.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is treated with cisplatin (CDDP) and radiotherapy (RT), and distinct results are observed among patients with similar clinicopathological aspects. This prospective study aimed to investigate whether c.-93G>A (rs1800734), c.

Cisplatin (CDDP) chemotherapy associated with radiation (RT) has been used in advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients, and vomiting is a common side effect during treatment. This prospective study aimed to identify the roles of GSTM1 and GSTT1 (presents or nulls), GSTP1 c.313A>G, XPC c.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck before and during treatment with high-dose cisplatin and radiotherapy.

Methods: This was an observational and longitudinal prospective study conducted from June 2011 to March 2013 at the clinical oncology ambulatory unit of a public teaching hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. The University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire was used to measure the QOL of patients before and after each chemotherapy cycle with high-dose cisplatin (80-100 mg/m(2), three cycles) and radiotherapy (2 Gy, 5 days/week for 7 weeks).

Unlabelled: Cisplatin (CDDP) plus radiotherapy (RT) has been used to treat advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) patients. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may be responsible for differences in chemo/radiosensitivity and side effects in those patients. We reported an advanced LSCC patient, who obtained durable complete response and unexpected pronounced toxicity during CDDP and RT, possibly due to SNPs in genes that modulate the effects of this therapeutic modality.

Recent studies suggest that lecithin-rich diet can modify cholesterol homeostasis and hepatic lipoprotein metabolism. Considering the phytotherapeutic impact of lecithin, this work hypothesizes that lecithin administration in hypercholesterolemic patients may reduce cholesterol concentrations by increasing biliary secretion. Total cholesterol and LDL were evaluated after soy lecithin administration in hypercholesterolemic patients.
