CTCF belongs to the Zn finger transcription factors family and binds to the promoter region of c-myc. CTCF is highly conserved between species, ubiquitous and localised in nuclei. The endogenous CTCF migrates as a 130 kDa (CTCF-130) protein on SDS-PAGE, however, the open reading frame (ORF) of the CTCF cDNA encodes only a 82 kDa protein (CTCF-82).

The titre and avidity of IgG antibodies to Porphyromonas gingivalis whole cells and a 47 kDa cell surface protein were determined in serum samples taken from 20 subjects with adult periodontitis and 20 controls, matched for age, gender, ethnic origin and oral hygiene status. Antibody titres were measured by ELISA and antibody avidity was determined by a chaotrope-dissociation ELISA. Avidity was defined as the molarity of chaotrope required to reduce absorbance by 50% (ID50).

The chaperonin-containing TCP-1 (CCT), found in the eukaryotic cytosol, is currently the focus of extensive research, CCT isolated from mouse testis lysate sediments at 20S in a sucrose gradient and accounts for about 70% of the total protein in this fraction. We intend to identify all the other proteins that copurify with CCT and to compile a reference profile for future studies. Their identification can be accelerated by a combination of protease digestion, matrix-assisted laser desorption-mass spectrometry, and database matching known as peptide mass fingerprinting.

A total of 1,515 women were interviewed from a multi-stage random sample of households in eight urban centers. In a cohort of 14 patients suffering from cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM), neuropsychological functioning was examined before and after AVM resection. Improvements after surgery were assumed to be due to enhanced neurocognitive functions associated with the hemisphere ipsilateral to the AVM, and to a lesser extent, with the contralateral hemisphere. Before surgical intervention, the performances of AVM patients were deficient relative to matched normals.

The cerebrospinal fluid total protein in 385 cases of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis showed no relationship to survival, but it was related to survival time in 34 cases of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Infrequent and mild pleocytosis, and oligoclonal bands seemed to have no clinical significance in well established cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

To identify socioeconomic and behavioural risk factors for development of persistent diarrhoea and malnutrition in children, a case-control study was carried out in Burma. Cases were 67 children 1-59 months old hospitalized for diarrhoea lasting > 14 days and complicated by severe malnutrition; for each case, a healthy control child was selected who was age- and sex-matched from the same neighbourhood. Homes of cases and controls were visited for interviews and for direct observation of household child-care practices.

The surgical treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) located in deep periventricular regions such as the basal ganglia is associated with marked morbidity and mortality. Approaches through critical brain regions afford limited exposure of the lesions, while surgical dissection is sometimes complicated by acute severe brain swelling and/or hemorrhage in the surrounding tissues. In our approach to deep AVMs, our regimen has evolved from direct staged microsurgical excision under routine fentanyl-N2O-relaxant anesthesia (first four patients) to the use of elective high-dose barbiturate anesthesia (subsequent 12 patients).
