Background: The rapid proliferation of smartphones has raised concerns about their impact on physical activity levels, particularly among younger demographics. While smartphones offer numerous benefits, there is growing evidence to suggest that excessive use may lead to sedentary behaviours, potentially impacting physical health adversely. Hence, this review was done to explore the association between smartphone addiction and reduced physical activity amongst children, adolescents and young adults.

Applying deep learning to predict patient prognostic survival outcomes using histological whole-slide images (WSIs) and genomic data is challenging due to the morphological and transcriptomic heterogeneity present in the tumor microenvironment. Existing deep learning-enabled methods often exhibit learning biases, primarily because the genomic knowledge used to guide directional feature extraction from WSIs may be irrelevant or incomplete. This results in a suboptimal and sometimes myopic understanding of the overall pathological landscape, potentially overlooking crucial histological insights.

Hippocampal neurogenesis, the generation of new neurons in the dentate gyrus (DG) of mammalian hippocampus, is essential for cognitive and emotional processes. Despite advances in understanding the transcription factors and signaling pathways that regulate DG neurogenesis, the epigenetic mechanisms underlying the molecular changes necessary for granule neuron generation remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the role of the H3K9 demethylase KDM3A in postnatal neurogenesis in mouse DG.

Mutations in the adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) copper transporting beta (ATP7B) gene result in Wilson's disease (WD), a rare autosomal recessive condition that affects copper metabolism, leading to its accumulation in multiple tissues, including the liver and the brain. This case report details the clinical presentation of three siblings born out of a consanguineous marriage, each displaying different manifestations. The youngest sibling exhibited significant hepatic and neurological symptoms, the middle sibling experienced neuropsychiatric issues, and the eldest one initially showed psychological distress without classic symptoms of WD.

Purpose: Concurrent Chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) offers attractive approaches providing the opportunity of cure, as well as organ preservation for patients with esophageal cancer and has now become the standard treatment for locally advanced unresectable esophageal cancers. However, one of the major concerns associated with CRT is the potential for treatment-related side effects, including strictures and fistula formation. This study aims to identify the predictors of stricture formation following definitive CRT in esophageal carcinoma.

Objective: With the regional anaesthetic technique used for brachial plexus block, the phrenic nerve (C3-C5) can be blocked due to its anatomical proximity to the brachial plexus and the effect of a significant volume of local anaesthetic deposited near the nerve roots. The goal of this study was to compare the incidence of hemi-diaphragmatic paralysis (HDP) following infraclavicular and supraclavicular approaches for brachial plexus block, using a low-volume local anaesthetic.

Methods: A total of 60 patients were enrolled in this study: 30 patients were assigned to the supraclavicular brachial plexus block group, and 30 patients were assigned to the infraclavicular brachial plexus block group.

Objective: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a critical complication in patients with liver cirrhosis, often resulting in high mortality. Understanding the microbiological agents causing SBP and their antibiotic resistance patterns is essential for effective treatment, particularly in tertiary care settings. This prospective observational study aimed to identify the microbial profile of SBP, evaluate antibiotic sensitivity, and assess patient outcomes.

Bone tissue engineering aims to develop biomaterials that are capable of effectively repairing and regenerating damaged bone tissue. Among the various polymers used in this field, polycaprolactone (PCL) is one of the most widely utilized. As a biocompatible polymer, PCL is easy to fabricate, cost-effective, and offers consistent quality control, making it a popular choice for biomedical applications.

Liver metastases from Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers present significant challenges in oncology, often signaling poor prognosis. Traditional detection methods like imaging and tissue biopsies have limitations in sensitivity, specificity, and tumor heterogeneity represen-tation. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, driven by advancements in ma-chine learning, algorithms, and data science, offers a promising frontier for early detection and management of liver metastases.

Spatially resolved transcriptomics enable comprehensive measurement of gene expression at subcellular resolution while preserving the spatial context of the tissue microenvironment. While deep learning has shown promise in analyzing SCST datasets, most efforts have focused on sequence data and spatial localization, with limited emphasis on leveraging rich histopathological insights from staining images. We introduce GIST, a deep learning-enabled gene expression and histology integration for spatial cellular profiling.

Background And Aim: Recent studies have shown that electronic cigarettes (ECs) use disrupts the oral microbiome composition and diversity, impairing the metabolic pathways of the mucosal cells. However, to date, no reports have evaluated the role of EC exposure in the context of oral metabolome. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of EC aerosol exposure in the dysregulation of the oral microbiome and metabolome profile using in vitro 3D organotypic models of human oral mucosa.

Marine fisheries resources are under increasing threat, necessitating the development of new effective monitoring and management strategies. Environmental DNA (eDNA) and RNA (eRNA) metabarcoding has emerged as a non-invasive and sensitive alternative method for monitoring fish biodiversity and fisheries resources and assessing the fisheries impact of anthropogenic activities. Here, we summarize crucial technical details about eDNA metabarcoding for marine fish monitoring and provide meta-analytical trends in primer selection and sample size, assessment standards, fish and fisheries databases, reference fish genomic databases, and other relevant metrics.

Aberrant activation of Notch signaling, mediated by the Notch intracellular domain (NICD), is linked to certain types of cancer. The NICD is released through γ-secretase-mediated cleavage of the Notch receptor. Therefore, development of a γ-secretase inhibitor (GSI) represents an anticancer strategy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the financial burden of tuberculosis (TB) on patients in Myanmar, particularly those utilizing private providers in public-private mix (PPM) schemes, despite TB services being generally free.
  • - A survey of 695 adults revealed that patients incurred a median total cost of approximately $53.4 for TB treatment, with the most significant expenses occurring during the pre-treatment phase and clinic visits.
  • - Alarmingly, about 34.5% of patients faced catastrophic health expenditure, defined as spending over 20% of their financial capacity on TB-related costs, highlighting the ongoing economic challenges despite available healthcare services.

This study investigated the relationship between demographic, healthcare, and socio-economic factors, and COVID-19 incidence rate per 100,000 population in Thailand at the province level between January 2020 and March 2022, using a five-phase approach by spatial analysis. OLS models were initially used with significant variables: household, hospital, and industry density, nighttime light index (NTLI). Spatial dependency led to spatial error (SEM) and spatial lag models (SLM), performing better with similar significant variables being applied.
