Here we describe a 72-year-old man on hemodialysis who presented with a fever and was found to have bacteremia. The only obvious source of infection was the hemodialysis catheter.

Mannnose-binding lectin (MBL) binds oligosaccharides on the surface of microorganisms to form complexes that activate the complement cascade and facilitate phagocytosis. Teicoplanin and dalbavancin glycopeptide antibiotics possess N-acetyl glucosamine and mannose oligosaccharides that may bind MBL. Pharmaceuticals capable of binding to MBL may decrease clearance of significant pathogens such as yeast.

The capsule of Pasteurella multocida serotype A strain ATCC 11039 is composed of hyaluronic acid and is an important virulence factor. Repeated subculturing of certain capsular serotype A strains results in dissociation from a capsulated to a noncapsulated phenotype with a concomitant loss of virulence. Although noncapsulated variants have been thought to arise as a result of mutation, the molecular mechanisms underlying this event are unknown.
