Objectives: The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of [(18)F]Galacto-RGD positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) imaging of αvβ3 expression in human carotid plaques.
Background: The integrin αvβ3 is expressed by macrophages and angiogenic endothelial cells in atherosclerotic lesions and thus is a marker of plaque inflammation and, potentially, of plaque vulnerability. [(18)F]Galacto-RGD is a PET tracer binding specifically to αvβ3.
Asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis may be treated with carotid endarterectomy (CEA), carotid artery stenting (CAS) or with best medical treatment (BMT) only. Definitive and evidence-based treatment recommendations for one of these options are currently not possible. Studies showing an advantage of CEA over BMT alone do not meet current standards from a pharmacological point of view.

Methods: Following elective carotid endarterectomy (CEA), atherosclerotic plaques from 36 patients (19 asymptomatic, 17 symptomatic) underwent ex-vivo VH-IVUS examination. Afterwards, tissue specimens were fixed with formalin and embedded in paraffin.
By broadening the stripe width of the active waveguide region, it is possible to extract high optical powers from semiconductor broad area lasers. However, a weak output beam quality, optical filamentation, and high peak power densities will result, which are invoked by the amplification of higher order modes. We show an approach to influence the optical field inside the resonator by integrating optical phase structures directly into the waveguide.

In order to further define the role of CCR6 in atherosclerosis, CCR6-deficient (Ccr6-/-) mice were crossed with low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient (Ldlr-/-) mice to generate atherosclerosis-prone mice deficient in CCR6. Compared to Ldlr-/- controls, atherosclerotic burden in the aortic sinus and aorta were reduced in Ccr6-/-Ldlr-/- mice fed a high fat diet, associated with a profound depression in lesional macrophage accumulation.

For this purpose, there is the need for simulation tools which can predict the optical properties of the complete device and thus of the outcoupled light. In the present publication, we show a numerical method to calculate typical intensity distributions of the multimode beam inside a high-power semiconductor laser.

Until now, there have been no comprehensive evidence- and consensus-based recommendations for the management of patients with extracranial carotid stenosis in Germany and Austria.
Methods: The literature was systematically searched for pertinent publications (1990-2011).
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) leads to abnormalities in the synthesis of collagen and complications involving arterial vessels. We describe here a mutation in the intron 14 of the COL3A1 gene leading to EDS Type IV (EDS IV) associated with venous manifestations only. The patient, an 18-year-old male, suffered from truncal varicosity of the long saphenous vein on both sides.

Even more important, patients and the public no longer accept a "learning by doing" training philosophy that leaves the learning curve on the patient's side. The Vascular International (VI) Foundation and School aims to overcome these obstacles by training conventional vascular and endovascular techniques before they are applied on patients.

During the past years, CNP has attained an increasing interest by many research groups, especially in the cardiovascular field. Nevertheless, still no reliable data exist on the difference of CNP concentration between serum and plasma samples.

In this paper, we present disocclusion-based 2D-3D registration handling occlusion and dissimilarity during registration. Therefore, we introduce two disocclusion techniques, Spline Interpolation and Stent-editing, and two robust similarity measures, Huber and Tukey Gradient Correlation.

The foundation Vascular International offers basic courses for vascular surgery techniques with training on pulsatile circulation, lifelike anatomical models. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a 2.

Due to restrictions in training time and the advent of endovascular techniques, new concepts including alternative environments for training and assessment of surgical skills are required. Over the past decade, training on simulators and synthetic models has become more sophisticated and lifelike.

Consequently, targeted changes in chromatin may also augment pluripotency of somatic cells. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of epigenetic drug BIX-01294 (BIX), a histone G9a inhibitor, on DNA methylation, expression of pluripotency genes POU5F1 (isoform a), NANOG, KLF4, and CMYC in mesenchymal stem cells, and the ability to increase their differentiation potential into endothelial cells (ECs).

Patients And Methods: Our study included 690 lower extremities with IC or CLI in 500 consecutive patients who were assessed by magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) according to the TASC II classification and in terms of the below the knee run-off status.
Metalloproteases with a disintegrin domain (ADAM) has already been implicated in various cellular processes such as cytokine and growth factor shedding, proliferation, migration, and degradation of extracellular matrix. Their role in the development and progression of atherosclerosis in carotid lesions is however unknown. The aim of the study was to analyze expression of proteolytic ADAMs (8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 17) and their inhibitors TIMP-1, -3 in patients with high-graded carotid artery stenosis.

Both the clinically established diameter criterion and novel approaches of computational finite element (FE) analyses for rupture risk stratification of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are based on assumptions of population-averaged, uniform material properties for the AAA wall. The presence of inter-patient and intra-patient variations in material properties is known, but has so far not been addressed sufficiently. In order to enable the preoperative estimation of patient-specific AAA wall properties in the future, we investigated the relationship between non-invasively assessable clinical parameters and experimentally measured AAA wall properties.

Stroke is among the major causes of mortality and disabilities in the world. About 80 % of all strokes in the anterior circulation are ischemic and up to 20 % of all ischemic strokes are caused by extracranial atherosclerotic carotid artery stenosis. The prevalence of a cervical internal carotid artery stenosis increases with age and can be found in 6.

Besides matrix metalloproteinases, cathepsins are the most potent elastolytic enzymes. The expression of cathepsins with known elastolytic and collagenolytic activities in the individual cells within AAA has not yet been determined.

It has been demonstrated that, (18)F-FDG-PET/CT may be useful for detection of pathological wall metabolism and therefore risk stratification. Quantification of the FDG-uptake in AAA wall is hampered by partial-volume (PV)-effects.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of CNP and its receptors (NPR2 and NPR3) in a human monocytic cell line (THP-1 cells) as well as in peripheral blood monocytic cells (PBMC). Impact of both, LPS and human oxLDL on expression pattern of CNP and its receptors shall be studied.
