An alternative approach for compliance testing of food and skin contact silicone elastomers by specific determination of volatile cyclic siloxane oligomers via GC-FID.

To date, silicone elastomers intended for food and skin contact are considered compliant as long as their weight loss during a thermal treatment (200 °C, 4 h) is below 0.5 wt%. The common assumption is that this weight loss is caused almost entirely by potentially harmful volatile siloxane oligomers.

Effects of a Brief Mindfulness-based Intervention in Patients with Psoriasis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Mindfulness is a special type of attention, namely focusing on the current moment in a non-judgmental manner. Extensive mindfulness-based interventions have been shown to have positive effects in patients with psoriasis. However, it is unclear whether brief (2-week) interventions are also beneficial.

Advanced separation of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons by number of aromatic rings using donor-acceptor-complex chromatography to extend on-line coupled liquid chromatography-gas chromatography.

An automated implementation for a subfractionation of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) into a mono-/di-aromatic fraction (MDAF) and a tri-/poly-aromatic fraction (TPAF) is presented, which is highly demanded by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) respecting the genotoxic and carcinogenic potential of MOAH. For this, donor-acceptor-complex chromatography (DACC) was used as a selective stationary phase to extend the conventional instrumental setup for the analysis of mineral oil hydrocarbons via on-line coupled liquid chromatography-gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (LC-GC-FID). A set of six new internal standards was introduced for the verification of the MOAH fractionation and a quantification of MDAF and TPAF, respectively.

Onset Time and Characteristics of Postprocedural Bleeding after Endoscopic Resection of Colorectal Lesions: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

Introduction: Postprocedural bleeding is a major adverse event after endoscopic resection of colorectal lesions, but the optimal surveillance time after endoscopy is unclear. In this study, we determined onset time and characteristics of postprocedural bleeding events.

Methods: We retrospectively screened patients who underwent endoscopic resection of colorectal lesions at three German hospitals between 2010 and 2019 for postprocedural bleeding events using billing codes.

Migration of oligomers from Tritan™ copolyester: application of hydrolysis for overall oligomer determination.

Tritan™ (a kind of glycol-modified polycyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate) is a novel copolyester mainly in use for the production of sports bottles and food storage containers. Oligomers in three food-grade Tritan™ samples were identified after dissolution-precipitation by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection and mass spectrometry and quantified after alkaline hydrolysis to the monomers. The obtained overall oligomer content <1000 Da determined by hydrolysis ranged from 7.

Interest in a short psychological intervention in patients with psoriasis: a cross-sectional observational study at a German clinic.

Introduction: Utilization of health services is not only associated with the kind of illness one has, but also with patient characteristics like age, sex or psychological variables. Psoriasis (PS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, in which psychological interventions were shown to be beneficial regarding not only psychological variables, but also regarding the skin status. The present study investigated with regard to which patient characteristics PS-patients with interest in participation in a short psychological intervention differ from PS-patients without interest.

Does "Low-Grade" Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma Exist? The Role of Mitotic Index in Separating Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma From Cellular Well-differentiated Liposarcoma.

Background: Subjective, varying criteria identify "low-grade" dedifferentiation in well-differentiated/dedifferentiated liposarcoma (WD/DDLPS). The value of mitotic rate (MR) in defining DDLPS is not confirmed. We studied all patients with the resection of their primary or first recurrence retroperitoneal WD/DDLPS at our institution to determine the value of MR in diagnosing DDLPS and if MR associates with patient survival.

Lifelong Imaging Surveillance is Indicated for Patients with Primary Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma.

Background: Surveillance imaging of patients with retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RP-LPS) after surgical resection is based on a projected risk of locoregional and distant recurrence. The duration of surveillance is not well defined because the natural history of RP-LPS after treatment is poorly understood. This study evaluated the long-term risk of recurrence and disease-specific survival (DSS) for a cohort of patients with at least 10 years of progression-free survival (10yr-PFS) from their primary resection.

Oligomers in polybutylene terephthalate for food contact-strategies on identification, quantification, and risk assessment.

Oligomers are a significant group of migrating substances from food contact materials made of polyesters like polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). Twenty-three cyclic and linear oligomers with different end groups including olefin-terminated oligomers, which are associated with thermal stress of the material, were tentatively identified in PBT extracts by high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry and diode array detection. Quantification approaches based on chromophore concentration, relative response factors, and overall oligomer determination after hydrolysis to the monomer terephthalic acid were employed.

Artificial intelligence for detection of microsatellite instability in colorectal cancer-a multicentric analysis of a pre-screening tool for clinical application.

Background: Microsatellite instability (MSI)/mismatch repair deficiency (dMMR) is a key genetic feature which should be tested in every patient with colorectal cancer (CRC) according to medical guidelines. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods can detect MSI/dMMR directly in routine pathology slides, but the test performance has not been systematically investigated with predefined test thresholds.

Method: We trained and validated AI-based MSI/dMMR detectors and evaluated predefined performance metrics using nine patient cohorts of 8343 patients across different countries and ethnicities.

F-FLT PET/CT as a Prognostic Imaging Biomarker of Disease-Specific Survival in Patients with Primary Soft-Tissue Sarcoma.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate F-FLT PET/CT as an early prognostic imaging biomarker of long-term overall survival and disease-specific survival (DSS) in soft-tissue sarcoma (STS) patients treated with neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) and surgical resection. This was a 10-y follow-up of a previous single-center, single-arm prospective clinical trial. Patients underwent F-FLT PET/CT before treatment (PET1) and after NAT (PET2).

[Prevention of gastrointestinal cancer].

Throughout the past decades, considerable progress has been made in the (early) diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. However, the prognosis for advanced stages of gastrointestinal tumors remains limited for many patients and approximately one third of all tumor patients die as a result of gastrointestinal tumors. The prevention and early detection of gastrointestinal tumors is therefore of great importance.

Aggressive osteoblastoma with a secondary aneurysmal bone cyst treated with denosumab.

Osteoblastomas and aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are rare benign bone tumors that make up about 1%-2% of primary bone malignancies, typically occurring in young patients with a median age of 20 years, most commonly effecting the axial skeleton. ABCs may develop independently as primary lesions, or secondary to other bony lesions including osteoblastomas, chondroblastomas, and giant cell tumors. Treatment of unresectable or extensive osteoblastomas can be challenging.

PPARγ induces PD-L1 expression in MSS+ colorectal cancer cells.

Only a small subset of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients benefits from immunotherapies, comprising blocking antibodies (Abs) against checkpoint receptor "programmed-cell-death-1" (PD1) and its ligand (PD-L1), because most cases lack the required mutational burden and neo-antigen load caused by microsatellite instability (MSI) and/or an inflamed, immune cell-infiltrated PD-L1+ tumor microenvironment. Peroxisome proliferator-activated-receptor-gamma (PPARγ), a metabolic transcription factor stimulated by anti-diabetic drugs, has been previously implicated in pre/clinical responses to immunotherapy. We therefore raised the hypothesis that PPARγ induces PD-L1 on microsatellite stable (MSS) tumor cells to enhance Ab-target engagement and responsiveness to PD-L1 blockage.

Seasonality in extra-pulmonary tuberculosis notifications in Germany 2004-2014- a time series analysis.

Background: Seasonality in tuberculosis (TB) has been found in different parts of the world, showing a peak in spring/summer and a trough in autumn/winter. The evidence is less clear which factors drive seasonality. It was our aim to identify and evaluate seasonality in the notifications of TB in Germany, additionally investigating the possible variance of seasonality by disease site, sex and age group.

Postpartum infection, pain and experiences with care among women treated for postpartum hemorrhage in three African countries: A cohort study of women managed with and without condom-catheter uterine balloon tamponade.

Objective: We aimed to determine the risk of postpartum infection and increased pain associated with use of condom-catheter uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) among women diagnosed with postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in three low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We also sought women's opinions on their overall experience of PPH care.

Methods: This prospective cohort study compared women diagnosed with PPH who received and did not receive UBT (UBT group and no-UBT group, respectively) at 18 secondary level hospitals in Uganda, Egypt, and Senegal that participated in a stepped wedge, cluster-randomized trial assessing UBT introduction.

Translating Knowledge About the Immune Microenvironment of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors into Effective Clinical Strategies.

The role of targeted therapy is firmly established for gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs); other modalities for targeting this disease are necessary for recurrent and refractory disease. There are several lines of evidence pointing to an active role of the immune system in GIST. Preclinical and clinical studies revealed that the most common type of immune cell infiltration in GISTs is tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs).

Long-Term Colloidally Stable Aqueous Dispersions of ≤5 nm Spinel Ferrite Nanoparticles.

Applications in biomedicine and ferrofluids, for instance, require long-term colloidally stable, concentrated aqueous dispersions of magnetic, biocompatible nanoparticles. Iron oxide and related spinel ferrite nanoparticles stabilized with organic molecules allow fine-tuning of magnetic properties via cation substitution and water-dispersibility. Here, we synthesize≤5 nm iron oxide and spinel ferrite nanoparticles, capped with citrate, betaine and phosphocholine, in a one-pot strategy.

Evaluation of Guideline Adherence for Cardiac Catheterization in Patients With Presumed Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease in Germany (ENLIGHT-KHK) - A Multicentre, Prospective, Observational Study.

Introduction: The diagnosis or exclusion of obstructive stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) in clinical practice is challenging and therefore clinical guidelines provide recommendations on the use of non-invasive and invasive testing. For Germany, data obtained from the OECD and health insurances indicate a potential non-adherence to guideline-recommended diagnostic pathways. However, there is a lack of prospective and reliable evidence for appropriate use of invasive coronary angiography (CA) in Germany.

Nonlocal and local models for taxis in cell migration: a rigorous limit procedure.

A rigorous limit procedure is presented which links nonlocal models involving adhesion or nonlocal chemotaxis to their local counterparts featuring haptotaxis and classical chemotaxis, respectively. It relies on a novel reformulation of the involved nonlocalities in terms of integral operators applied directly to the gradients of signal-dependent quantities. The proposed approach handles both model types in a unified way and extends the previous mathematical framework to settings that allow for general solution-dependent coefficient functions.

Investigation of predictors of interest in a brief mindfulness-based intervention and its effects in patients with psoriasis at a rehabilitation clinic (SkinMind): an observational study and randomised controlled trial.

Introduction: Psoriasis (PS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease accompanied by reduced quality of life. Mindfulness is the ability to focus on the present moment without evaluation. Findings on the effects of 8-week mindfulness trainings in patients with PS reveal positive effects on the severity of the disease and quality of life.

Chemotherapy and Survival in Patients with Primary High-Grade Extremity and Trunk Soft Tissue Sarcoma.

The use of upfront chemotherapy for primary localized soft tissue sarcoma (STS) of the extremity and trunk is debated. It remains unclear if chemotherapy adds clinical benefit, which patients are likely to benefit, and whether the timing of therapy affects outcomes. We used the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to examine the association between overall survival (OS) and chemotherapy in 5436 patients with the five most common subtypes of STS with primary disease localized to the extremity or trunk, mirroring the patient population of a modern phase 3 clinical trial of neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
