Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the relationship between body composition and the recurrence of acute pancreatitis (AP) among hospitalized patients.
  • Out of 347 patients analyzed, 25.6% experienced a recurrent episode of AP, and factors like obesity and specific types of pancreatitis (alcohol and gallstones) were linked to this recurrence.
  • Overall, body composition was not significantly associated with recurrent AP, but certain fat types showed varying relationships with the development of chronic pancreatitis and diabetes mellitus.

Purpose: To develop a method for quantifying the fatty acid composition (FAC) of human epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) using accelerated MRI and identify its potential for detecting proinflammatory biomarkers in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Methods: A multi-echo radial gradient-echo sequence was developed for accelerated imaging during a breath hold using a locally low-rank denoising technique to reconstruct undersampled images. FAC mapping was achieved by fitting the multi-echo images to a multi-resonance complex signal model based on triglyceride characterization.

Background: nonsense alleles generate negligible CFTR protein due to the nonsense mutation: 1) triggering mRNA degradation by nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), and 2) terminating mRNA translation prematurely. Thus, people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) who carry nonsense alleles cannot benefit from current modulator drugs, which target CFTR protein. In this study, we examined whether PTBP1 and HNRNPL, two RNA binding proteins that protect a subset of mRNAs with a long 3' untranslated region (UTR) from NMD, similarly affect mRNA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to compare postoperative drainage rates and culture profiles in children with complicated appendicitis treated with two common antibiotic regimens: piperacillin-tazobactam (PT) and ceftriaxone with metronidazole (CM).
  • A retrospective analysis of 1,002 children from 15 hospitals was conducted between 2015 and 2020, leading to a matched sample of 778 patients for comparison of drainage rates and infection-related cultures.
  • Results showed that PT had similar overall drainage rates to CM but higher rates of drainage related to specific organisms, indicating that the use of antipseudomonal antibiotics did not lead to better outcomes in this context.

The purpose of the present study was to conduct a process evaluation of intervention delivery for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic (NCT03915548). The RCT tested the effects of a telephone-delivered behavioral intervention on changes in breast cancer survivors' satisfaction with social roles and activities, as compared to an attention control condition. This process evaluation examined (a) fidelity monitoring scores; (b) participants' perceived benefit ratings for gaining confidence, reducing distress, adjusting habits and routines, setting goals, and increasing exercise; and (c) field notes, email communications, and transcripts of coach supervision and debriefing sessions.

  • This paper explores the use of Facebook for recruiting breast cancer survivors for a clinical trial during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting limited prior evidence in this area.
  • The study found that Facebook was a highly effective recruitment tool, contributing to 59% of the total participants and reaching individuals from 24 states, while traditional clinic recruitment was less geographically diverse.
  • Despite some demographic differences between participants recruited through Facebook and clinics, the study emphasizes that social media can enhance recruitment efforts for cancer research while considering potential biases.

Mucopolysaccharidosis I-Hurler (MPS I-H) is caused by the loss of α-L-iduronidase, a lysosomal enzyme that degrades glycosaminoglycans. Current therapies cannot treat many MPS I-H manifestations. In this study, triamterene, an FDA-approved, antihypertensive diuretic, was found to suppress translation termination at a nonsense mutation associated with MPS I-H.

Digital holography has been proposed to fulfill a need for an imaging diagnostic capable of in situ monitoring of surface erosion caused by plasma-material interaction in nuclear fusion devices. A digital holography diagnostic for 3D surface erosion measurement has been developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory with the goal of deployment on a plasma device. A proof-of-concept in situ demonstration is planned which would involve measurement of plasma erosion on targets exposed to an electrothermal arc source.

miRNA rarely possess pan-oncogenic or tumor-suppressive properties. Most miRNAs function under tissue-specific contexts, acting as either tumor suppressors in one tissue, promoting oncogenesis in another, or having no apparent role in the regulation of processes associated with the hallmarks of cancer. What has been less clear is the role of miRNAs within cell types of the same tissue and the ability within each cell type to contribute to oncogenesis.

Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) targets mRNAs that contain a premature termination codon (PTC) for degradation, preventing their translation. By altering the expression of PTC-containing mRNAs, NMD modulates the inheritance pattern and severity of genetic diseases. NMD also limits the efficiency of suppressing translation termination at PTCs, an emerging therapeutic approach to treat genetic diseases caused by in-frame PTCs (nonsense mutations).

Introduction: Many breast cancer survivors report an inability to fully participate in activities of daily living after completing cancer treatment. Reduced activity participation is linked to negative consequences for individuals (eg, depression, reduced quality of life) and society (reduced workforce participation). There is currently a lack of evidence-based interventions that directly foster cancer survivors' optimal participation in life roles and activities.
