We describe the clinical course of a patient who experienced refractory pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) after undergoing HLA-matched allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (allo-PBSCT) for refractory anemia with an excess of blasts in transformation that had evolved from Kostmann syndrome. The treatment for patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML) developing from Kostmann syndrome has not been standardized. We treated this patient with allo-PBSCT using a regimen combining high-dose cytosine arabinoside with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, in addition to total body irradiation and cyclophosphamide without preceding intensive chemotherapy.

Background: Research in Western countries has shown most centenarians to be survivors with multiple comorbidities. However, Japanese centenarians' morbidity and its relationship to functional status has yet to be elucidated. The aim of this study is to clarify the association of morbidity with the physical and cognitive function of centenarians.

The presence of the branches prevents the polymer chain from forming a collapsed conformational state. The photophysical properties of the resulting solution-like conformation are studied by measuring single-molecule photobleaching dynamics, emission polarization anisotropy and emission spectra.

We generated various hematopoietic progenitors in coculture, and this hematopoietic activity was concentrated in cobblestone-like cells derived from differentiated hESC. The cobblestone-like cells mostly expressed CD34 and retained an endothelial cell potential.

Compared with placebo, TG was reduced by 30.1% with rosuvastatin 5mg, 30.

Consequently, the long-term results are unclear. We aimed to clarify the validity of surgery for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in patients with pneumoconiosis.

Setting: Sugita Eye Hospital, Nagoya, Japan.
Methods: Forty-two eyes of 42 consecutive diabetes mellitus patients (DM group) and 42 eyes of 42 non-DM patients (control group) scheduled to have cataract surgery were enrolled.
Background: Dopamine receptors (DRs) are members of seven transmembrane domain trimeric guanosine 5'-triphosphate (GTP)-binding protein-coupled receptor family. Through dopamine receptor activation, dopamine plays a significant role in regulating gene expression, such as induced tumor cell migration.
Materials And Methods: We investigated DRD1 and DRD2 expressions in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) for immunohistochemistry and analyzed differences between DRD1, DRD2, and DARPP-32 expressions of clinicopathological features in 122 patients with ESCC.

Background: Centenarians are sometimes said to be representative of lifelong healthy aging. Whether they are, in fact, examples of healthy aging remains a subject of debate. The existence of heterogeneity in functional status has been reported repeatedly in previous studies of centenarians.

To test the hypothesis that some cells in the inner ear are derived from BM, we transplanted either isolated whole BM cells or clonally expanded hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) prepared from transgenic mice expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) into irradiated adult mice. Isolated GFP(+) BM cells were also transplanted into conditioned newborn mice derived from pregnant mice injected with busulfan (which ablates HSCs in the newborns).

Because myofibroblasts are thought to be an activated form of fibroblasts, we tested the hypothesis that fibroblasts are derived from HSCs.
Materials And Methods: Clones of cells derived from single cells of EGFP Ly-5.
Objective: Recent studies have reported that bone marrow cells can give rise to tissue fibroblasts. However, the bone marrow cell(s) that gives rise to fibroblasts has not yet been identified. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that tissue fibroblasts are derived from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in vivo.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRecent studies evaluating hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) potential raise the possibility that, in addition to embryonic sources, adult valve fibroblasts may be derived from HSCs. To test this hypothesis, we used methods that allow the potential of a single HSC to be evaluated in vivo. This was achieved by isolation and clonal expansion of single lineage-negative (Lin-), c-kit(+), Sca-1(+), CD34- cells from the bone marrow of mice that ubiquitously express enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) combined with transplantation of individual clonal populations derived from these candidate HSCs into a lethally irradiated congenic non-EGFP mouse.

The method is based on a combination of far-field and near-field polarized excitation in a wide-field fluorescence microscope and provides the orientation and axes ratio r of a rotationally symmetric ellipsoid. Potential applications of the method including the study of conjugated polymer conformations are discussed.

Previously, we have screened the expression of PEDF by immunohistochemical analysis and showed that low expression of PEDF is associated with increased risk of hepatic metastasis and short survival. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether PEDF gene is a potent tumor suppressor and a potential candidate for cancer gene therapy.

We evaluated the usefulness and limitations in ultrasonography (US) for diagnosing neck lymph node metastases in patients with hypopharyngeal cancer by comparing the results of preoperative US examinations with postoperative pathological findings following neck dissection. Seventy-five previously untreated patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma underwent a curative procedure that included neck dissection. Preoperatively, all patients were examined by palpation, computed tomography (CT), and US.

To define more precisely the hematopoietic differentiation pathway through which mesangial cells are derived, we studied the relationship between mesangial cell expression and individual hematopoietic lineages by means of a transplantation strategy. In a series of clonal HSC transplantation experiments, we generated 3 mice engrafted predominantly by granulocytes and macrophages (GMs) and 4 mice engrafted with B-cells or with B-cells and T-cells.

Hypothesizing that 5HTT gene polymorphisms could influence human longevity via negative affect; we compared the polymorphic variation of the 5HTT gene between 265 Japanese centenarians and control subjects. In addition, we evaluated the relationships between the 5HTT genotype and the physical, cognitive, and biologic status of centenarians, as indicated by the Barthel Index, the Mini-Mental State Examination, and serum albumin concentration, respectively.
