Article Synopsis
  • Environmental stressors like traffic noise contribute to a significant loss of healthy life years and require effective prevention strategies to address health impacts, especially related to vascular dysfunction.
  • In a study using mice exposed to aircraft noise, various methods of activating α1AMPK—through pharmacological means, exercise, and intermittent fasting—were found to prevent endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress caused by the noise exposure.
  • The findings suggest that activating α1AMPK specifically in endothelial cells can protect against noise-induced vascular damage, highlighting the need for further research to evaluate these interventions in human populations.

The selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor atomoxetine is potentially among the first-line pharmacotherapy options for ADHD. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) with the quantification and interpretation of atomoxetine serum concentrations is used to determine an individual dose followed by an optimal effectiveness and minimal side effects. The aim of this retrospective pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic analysis was to derive age-appropriate recommendations for the implementation of TDM to improve the efficacy and tolerability of atomoxetine in children and adolescents.

Voluntary exercise training is an effective way to prevent cardiovascular disease, since it results in increased NO bioavailability and decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), especially its α1AMPK subunit, modulates ROS-dependent vascular homeostasis. Since endothelial cells play an important role in exercise-induced changes of vascular signaling, we examined the consequences of endothelial-specific α1AMPK deletion during voluntary exercise training.

Objective: Fluid shear stress (FSS) is known to mediate multiple phenotypic changes in the endothelium. Laminar FSS (undisturbed flow) is known to promote endothelial alignment to flow, which is key to stabilizing the endothelium and rendering it resistant to atherosclerosis and thrombosis. The molecular pathways responsible for endothelial responses to FSS are only partially understood.

The influence of food intake on behavior problems of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) was already described in the early 20th century. Eliminating food components by using the Oligoantigenic Diet (OD) leads to reduction of ADHD symptoms for more than two-thirds of patients. The aim of our study was to reveal how to identify foods having an impact on ADHD symptomatology.

Arterial hypertension is one of the major health risk factors leading to coronary artery disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease. Dietary uptake of inorganic nitrite (NO) and nitrate (NO) via vegetables leads to enhanced vascular NO bioavailability and provides antihypertensive effects. The present study aims to understand the underlying vasoprotective effects of nutritional NO and NO co-therapy in mice with angiotensin-II (AT-II)-induced arterial hypertension.

Objectives: Radiation protection is essential for staff of cardiac catheterization laboratories in order to prevent long-term radiation- associated injury and disease. Instant feedback about the actual received dose may help operators to optimize the use of existing shielding devices. Therefore, the current study was designed to investigate whether routine use of real-time dosimetry may be able to reduce staff radiation exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) often happens alongside mitral regurgitation (MR), and a new study looks at how it affects patients after a certain heart repair procedure called TMVR.
  • The study included 606 patients and found that many had some level of TR, with severe cases being linked to lower chances of survival after one year.
  • Reducing TR after the procedure was important for better health and improved symptoms for the patients, especially those with functional MR.

Cardiovascular diseases represent the leading cause of global deaths and life years spent with a severe disability. Endothelial dysfunction and vascular oxidative stress are early precursors of atherosclerotic processes in the vascular wall, all of which are hallmarks in the development of cardiovascular diseases and predictors of future cardiovascular events. There is growing evidence that inflammatory processes represent a major trigger for endothelial dysfunction, vascular oxidative stress and atherosclerosis and clinical data identified inflammation as a cardiovascular risk factor on its own.
