Glioblastoma Multiforme: A Rare Case of Spinal Drop Metastasis.

Background: The occurrence of spinal drop metastasis in patients diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is rare. In previous reports, this diagnosis occurred after surgical resection of GBM, which was believed to increase the likelihood of tumor seeding. Diagnosis of spinal drop metastasis prior to surgery remains rare.

Obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to odontoid pannus: case report and review of literature.

Odontoid pannus or periodontoid pseudotumour is associated with a variety of rheumatological conditions. We report a case of an 80-year old man who presented with acute hydrocephalus following an emergency operation to amputate his infected left big toe. Imaging revealed a large tissue mass causing severe compression at the cervico-medullary junction and obstruction of CSF flow.

The vagus nerve modulates BDNF expression and neurogenesis in the hippocampus.

Accumulating evidence suggests that certain gut microbiota have antidepressant-like behavioural effects and that the microbiota can regulate neurogenesis and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus. The precise mechanisms underlying these effects are not yet clear. However, the vagus nerve is one of the primary bidirectional routes of communication between the gut and the brain and thus may represent a candidate mechanism.

Double trouble: a tale of two radio-treatments.

In recent years, an increasing number of patients are treated with radiation. In the early era of radiotherapy, which began soon after X-rays were discovered by Roentgen in 1895, tumours were irradiated with high doses of X-rays in a single fraction. The major initial setback was the damage caused to normal tissues; however, in recent times the use of stereotactic radiosurgery, which delivers high doses of radiation precisely to abnormal tissue targets while sparing the surrounding normal brain tissue, and particularly for surgically inaccessible tumours, has taken centre stage.

Haemangiopericytomas are a group of aggressive soft tissue sarcomas that originate from the pericytes in the walls of capillaries. Local invasion of the surrounding structures is not uncommon. Symptoms depend on the location, size and grade of tumour.

Spinal dural arterio-venous fistula (DAVF) is rare and usually involves the thoracic segments. The classical presentation is a slowly progressive ataxia. Clinical presentation of intracranial DAVF depends on the site of the DAVF, as well as the vessels involved.
