We report a rare case of small bowel obstruction (SBO) caused by endometriosis in a postmenopausal woman. A 54-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Before menopause, she sometimes had abdominal pain associated with menses.

Pleural invasion by peripheral lung cancer: prediction with three-dimensional CT.

Rationale And Objectives: To evaluate the clinical utility of three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) for predicting pleural invasion by peripheral lung cancer.

Materials And Methods: CT findings (tumor size, vertical diameter, length and area of the interface between tumor and the pleura, ratios of length and area [Rarea] of interface between tumor and the pleura to tumor size, angle between the tumor and adjacent pleura, presence or absence of pleural thickening, and originally developed 3D pleural patterns) in 201 consecutive patients with lung cancer of ≤3 cm in contact with pleural surface were correlated with pathologic findings. Logistic modeling was used for determining the significant factors for prediction of pleural invasion, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used for investigating diagnostic capability of significant factors, resulting in a recommendation to the optimal criteria for predicting pleural invasion and to the optimal threshold for differentiating parietal from visceral invasion.

We address the pathological complete response and long-term survival of elderly patients after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in locally advanced, unresectable gastric cancer. An 83-year-old man was hospitalized for upper abdominal pain. Gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a large tumor spanning from the gastric angle to the antrum, and extending to the duodenum.

Preclinical anticancer effects and toxicologic assessment of hepatic artery infusion of fine-powder cisplatin with lipiodol in vivo.

We conducted an in vivo study to evaluate the anticancer effect and toxicity of fine-powder cisplatin suspended in lipiodol (fCDDP/LPD suspension) after a single administration of three different doses to rats via the intrahepatic artery after transplantation of rat ascites hepatoma cells. The toxicity of the fCDDP/LPD suspension was also assessed in the same protocol in noncancer-bearing rats and the observed toxicologic changes were compared among groups administered saline (Sal), an aqueous solution of fCDDP (fCDDP/Sal solution), and LPD alone. In parallel with the toxicity test, plasma CDDP concentrations were compared between the fCDDP/LPD suspension and fCDDP/Sal solution.

Comparative study of peripheral neurotoxicity after injection of two different paclitaxel formulations in rats.

We previously reported that the combination therapy of percutaneous ethanol injection and radiofrequency ablation (PEI-RFA) was more effective than RFA alone in inducing wider coagulated necrosis for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the present study, we thoracoscopically applied the combination therapy to the treatment of HCC located immediately under the diaphragm. RFA electrode and ethanol injection needle were inserted into the tumor through the right side of the diaphragm in 6 patients with HCC close to the diaphragm.

Characteristics of chronically paced cardiac functions in the congenital complete atrioventricular block.

Characteristics of morphology, cardiac function, and cardiac reserve at late state were evaluated at rest, by changing the pacing rates, and after exercise in patients with ventricular pacemakers for isolated congenital complete atrioventricular block. Heart size was reduced statistically after pacemaker implantation, and concentric myocardial hypertrophy was observed. Cardiac pump functions at rest seemed fairly well compensated by increased ejection fraction, but the cardiac index was still lower than that of the normal heart.
