Previous studies in Washington State identified high levels of mislabeled salmon in both markets and restaurants, resulting in local legislation being passed that requires proper labeling of salmon products, including identifying it as wild-caught or farm-raised.

Structural Insights into Linkage-Specific Ubiquitin Chains Using Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry.

The structural characterization and differentiation of four types of oligoubiquitin conjugates [linear (Met1)-, Lys11-, Lys48-, Lys63-linked di-, tri-, and tetraubiquitin chains] using ion mobility mass spectrometry are reported. A comparison of collision cross sections for the same linkage of di-, tri-, and tetraubiquitin chains shows differences in conformational elongation for higher charge states due to the interplay of linkage-derived structure and Coulombic repulsion. For di- and triubiquitin chains, this elongation results in a single narrow feature representing an elongated conformation type for multiple higher charge state species.

Background: Regular physical activity is important for arthritis self-management and could be promoted through tailoring community leisure and fitness centers' customer-relationship management (CRM) strategies.

Objectives: This study investigates the influence of two CRM strategies on individuals with arthritis reaching or maintaining two moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) thresholds (≥150 and ≥45 minutes/week) from baseline-to-12 months and 12-to-24 months as well as mean changes in total minutes/week of MVPA. It also explores time-dependent variations in the influence of socio-cognitive variables on MVPA outcomes.

Household Income and Parental Educational Level Affect Post-Operative Opioid Usage in Pediatric Orthopaedic Patients.

Opioid medications are commonly prescribed after pediatric orthopaedic surgery, but there is a critical need to optimize prescribing practice. This study identifies socio-economic characteristics, surgical characteristics, and patient reported psychological factors influencing postoperative opioid use in this population and found that post-operative opioid use in this pediatric orthopaedic population is multifactorial. Physicians should consider implementing protocols for initial opioid prescriptions to cover two to three days following common orthopaedic surgeries for most pediatric patients.

This work aims to characterize the mechanism of ACL injury during professional football competitions using video analysis. We hypothesize that football-specific injury trends will emerge, including high rates of contact injuries and associations with shallow knee and hip flexion angles (0°-30°).

Impact of hospital strain on excess deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic-United States, july 2020-july 2021.

This article describes the excess deaths observed when hospitals are strained by COVID-19 admissions, as defined by intensive care unit bed occupancy. Specifically, when intensive care unit bed occupancy reaches 75% of capacity, there are an estimated 12,000 additional excess deaths; when hospitals exceed 100% of their intensive care unit bed capacity, approximately 80,000 excess deaths are expected in the following 2 weeks nationally. This report suggests that all patient populations, including transplant candidates and recipients, will experience additional excess deaths when there is increased strain on hospitals due to COVID-19 surges.

Surges in COVID-19 cases have stressed hospital systems, negatively affected health care and public health infrastructures, and degraded national critical functions (1,2). Resource limitations, such as available hospital space, staffing, and supplies led some facilities to adopt crisis standards of care, the most extreme operating condition for hospitals, in which the focus of medical decision-making shifted from achieving the best outcomes for individual patients to addressing the immediate care needs of larger groups of patients (3). When hospitals deviated from conventional standards of care, many preventive and elective procedures were suspended, leading to the progression of serious conditions among some persons who would have benefitted from earlier diagnosis and intervention (4).
