Seroepidemiology of human leptospirosis in the Dominican Republic: A multistage cluster survey, 2021.

Little is known about the epidemiology of leptospirosis in the Dominican Republic, the second most populous country in the Caribbean. We report on findings from a multi-stage household survey across two regions in the country that reveals a previously under-estimated burden of human Leptospira infection. Our findings, based on the reference-standard microscopic agglutination test, indicate a complex picture of serogroup diversity, spatial heterogeneity in infection and risk, and a marked discrepancy between reported cases and serologically estimated infections.

Chikungunya Outbreak Risks after the 2014 Outbreak, Dominican Republic.

The 2014 chikungunya outbreak in the Dominican Republic resulted in intense local transmission, with high postoutbreak seroprevalence. The resulting population immunity will likely minimize risk for another large outbreak through 2035, but changes in population behavior or environmental conditions or emergence of different virus strains could lead to increased transmission.

Linear infrastructure and associated wildlife accidents create an ecological trap for an apex predator and scavenger.

Animals may fall into an 'ecological trap' when they select seemingly attractive habitats at the expense of their fitness. This maladaptive behavior is often the result of rapid, human-induced changes in their natal environment, such as the construction of energy and transportation infrastructure. We tested the ecological trap hypothesis regarding human-created linear infrastructure on a widely distributed apex predator and scavenger-the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), whose range spans the entire Northern Hemisphere.

Electrochemical detection of pollutants ( heavy metals) in real samples often requires the adjustment of pH to allow optimal sensitivity. Such sample pretreatment can be challenging for on-site applications as it implies the use of valves, pumps and storage of base or acid solutions. We report here the use of an electrochemical approach for the control of water sample pH.

Background And Objectives: Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation (CR) is crucial for managing conditions like congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and post-COVID-19 complications. This review examines CR practices in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, exploring challenges, disparities, and emerging trends.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify studies published between date of inception and April 24th, 2024, focusing on CR programs, outcomes, challenges, and strategies specific to the MENA region.

However, challenges persist due to the high consumption of NADH and the limited efficiency of its cyclic regeneration, which currently hinder widespread application. To address these obstacles, based on in-situ growth of 3D ordered metal-organic framework (NU-1000) on the surface of graphite felt, [Rh(Cp*)(bpy)Cl] were immobilized on the Zr nodes of NU-1000 by solvent-assisted ligand incorporation (SALI), and applied in a flow bioreactor.

The mosquito-borne disease, Yellow fever (YF), has been largely controlled via mass delivery of an effective vaccine and mosquito control interventions. However, there are warning signs that YF is re-emerging in both Sub-Saharan Africa and South America. Imported from Africa in slave ships, YF was responsible for devastating outbreaks in the Caribbean.

Evaluation of short-circuited electrodes in combination with dark fermentation for promoting biohydrogen production process.

Short-circuited electrodes, in combination with dark fermentation, were evaluated in a biohydrogen production process. The system is based on an innovative design of a non-compartmented electromicrobial bioreactor with a conductive tubular membrane as cathode and a graphite felt as anode. In particular, the electrode specialization occurred when the bioreactor was inoculated with manure as the whole medium and when a vacuum was applied in the tubular membrane, for allowing continuous extraction of gaseous species (H, CH, CO) from the bioreactor.
