We previously showed a link between maternal vascular malperfusion and pre-term birth (PTB) in pregnant people living with HIV (PPLH) initiating antiretroviral treatment (ART) before pregnancy, indicating poor placental vascularisation. After measuring antenatal plasma angiogenic factors to seek mechanistic insights, low levels of plasma Factor XIIIA1 (FXIIIA1) and vascular-endothelial-growth-factor (VEGF) was significantly associated with PTB at the time closest to delivery (median 34 weeks) in PPLH initiating ART before pregnancy. Knowing that FXIIIA1 is crucial for haemostasis, angiogenesis, implantation and pregnancy maintenance and that expression is found on placental macrophages (Hofbauer cells), we examined placentae at delivery from matching participants who either initiating ART before pregnancy or during gestation.

Urbanization is a phenomenon where humans concentrate in high densities and consume more per capita energy than in rural areas, imposing high pressures on biodiversity and ecosystem services. We consider issues related to the effect of climate change on the persistence of (trend-corrected) temperatures using global gridded data for both land and oceans. We first discuss how the presence of trends and additive noise affects inference about persistence. Ignoring a trend induces an upward bias, while not accounting for noise induces a downward bias.

Ensuring sexual and reproductive health, and rights for adolescents entails the prevention of early pregnancies, which are widely recognized as a public health problem. Based on the ecological model for early pregnancy, this article identifies the healthcare requirements for preventing unintended adolescent pregnancies in predominantly indigenous communities in Chiapas, Mexico. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods study design, we surveyed adolescents (12-15 years old) and health personnel, organized focus groups with adolescents and their parents, and conducted in-depth interviews at the individual, family, school and community levels.

Many neurodegenerative diseases involve amyloidogenic proteins forming surface-bound aggregates on anionic membranes, and the peptide amyloid β (Aβ) in Alzheimer's disease is one prominent example of this. Curcumin is a small polyphenolic molecule that provides an interesting opportunity to understand the fundamental mechanisms of membrane-mediated aggregation because it embeds into membranes to alter their structure while also altering Aβ aggregation in an aqueous environment. Leaf water potential, gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence exhibited significant differences among genotypes, high environmental effects, but low heritability. The highest-yielding and drought-tolerant genotypes presented superior harvest index and grain weight, compared to drought-susceptible ones.
