Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on the analysis of water (HO) and heavy water (HDO) profiles in the mesosphere of Venus using data from Venus Express, revealing significant increases in both substances and a notable rise in the D/H ratio with altitude.
  • Two main hypotheses are proposed to explain these changes: isotopic fractionation due to photolysis or phase change processes connected to sulfuric acid aerosols, with the latter accounting for the observed rapid changes in water vapor and aerosols.
  • The findings imply that the varying altitudes are essential for understanding Venus's deuterium and hydrogen reservoirs, and that these altitude changes directly impact the rates at which hydrogen and deuterium escape, suggesting a need for evolutionary models to factor in

DNA repetitive sequences (or repeats) comprise over 50% of the human genome and have a crucial regulatory role, specifically regulating transcription machinery. The human brain is the tissue with the highest detectable repeat expression and dysregulations on the repeat activity are related to several neurological and neurodegenerative disorders, as repeat-derived products can stimulate a pro-inflammatory response. Even so, it is unclear how repeat expression acts on the aging neurotypical brain.

Schizophrenia is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder with sexually dimorphic features, including differential symptomatology, drug responsiveness, and male incidence rate. Prior large-scale transcriptome analyses for sex differences in schizophrenia have focused on the prefrontal cortex. Analyzing BrainSeq Consortium data (caudate nucleus: n = 399, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: n = 377, and hippocampus: n = 394), we identified 831 unique genes that exhibit sex differences across brain regions, enriched for immune-related pathways.

Background: The term 'care-experienced' refers to anyone who is currently in care or has been in care at any stage in their life. A complex interplay of factors leads to care-experienced children and young people (CECYP) experiencing poorer oral health and access to dental care than their peers. A rapid review of the co-production of health and social care research with vulnerable children and young people (CYP) was carried out to inform the development of a co-produced research project exploring the oral health behaviours and access to dental services of CECYP.

Background: Children and young people (CYP) in care experience poorer physical health and overall wellbeing in comparison to their peers. Despite this, relatively little is known about what their oral health needs and behaviours are. The aim of this scoping review was to provide a global perspective on the oral health status and behaviours of CYP in care and care leavers.

  • Primary human trophoblast stem cells (TSCs) and those derived from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) can be modeled in the lab, but how hPSCs differentiate into TSCs is not well understood.
  • This study shows that a specific primed pluripotent state can produce TSCs by activating certain pathways (like EGF and WNT) and inhibiting others (like TGFβ and ROCK), all without adding BMP4, referred to as the TS condition.
  • The researchers found that the TSCs generated under TS conditions can proliferate extensively and closely resemble first-trimester placental cells, suggesting that primed hPSCs can differentiate into TSCs through various

Hunting mortality can affect population abundance, demography, patterns of dispersal and philopatry, breeding, and genetic diversity. We investigated the effects of hunting on the reproduction and genetic diversity in a puma population in western Colorado, USA. We genotyped over 11,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), using double-digest, restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) in 291 tissue samples collected as part of a study on the effects of hunting on puma population abundance and demography in Colorado from 2004 to 2014.

Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is a heavy metal endocrine disruptor used widely in various industries worldwide and is considered a reproductive toxicant. Our previous studies demonstrated that lactational exposure to Cr(VI) caused follicular atresia, disrupted steroid hormone biosynthesis and signaling, and delayed puberty. However, the underlying mechanism was unknown.

Objective: Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that originates during neurodevelopment and has complex genetic and environmental etiologies. Despite decades of clinical evidence of altered striatal function in affected patients, studies examining its cellular and molecular mechanisms in humans are limited. To explore neurodevelopmental alterations in the striatum associated with schizophrenia, the authors established a method for the differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into ventral forebrain organoids (VFOs).

Despite advances in noninvasive imaging modalities to identify atrial fibrillation (AF) risk in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), there is a paucity of evidence concerning the impact of low Left Atrial strain (LAS) on AF and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) incidence in these patients. This study investigated the diagnostic and prognostic significance of LAS in predicting AF and MACE in HCM. Findings revealed lower LA reservoir (MD: -11.

We conducted a population genomic study of the crested caracara (Caracara plancus) using samples (n = 290) collected from individuals in Florida, Texas, and Arizona, United States. Crested caracaras are non-migratory raptors ranging from the southern tip of South America to the southern United States, including a federally protected relict population in Florida long thought to have been isolated since the last ice age. Our objectives were to evaluate genetic diversity and population structure of Florida's apparently isolated population and to evaluate taxonomic relationships of crested caracaras at the northern edge of their range.

Opioids are a leading cause of drug overdose deaths in the United States. Methadone used as medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) reduces drug cravings and promotes abstinence. However, individuals in methadone-based MOUD treatment commonly report subjective sleep complaints and are at risk for respiratory depression from opioids.

Article Synopsis
  • Prevention strategies for standard modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (SMuRFs) are crucial for improving outcomes in cardiovascular disease, but acute myocardial infarction (AMI) can still occur in individuals without SMuRFs.
  • A study analyzed AMI hospitalizations from 2000 to 2014 and found that 3.6% of patients had no documented SMuRFs, often receiving fewer medical treatments and procedures.
  • Patients without SMuRFs had significantly higher mortality rates within 28 days and 1 year after hospitalization for AMI compared to those with SMuRFs, highlighting the need for better early risk identification and tailored treatment strategies for this group.

The interaction between human Growth Hormone (hGH) and hGH Receptor (hGHR) has basic relevance to cancer and growth disorders, and hGH is the scaffold for Pegvisomant, an anti-acromegaly therapeutic. For the latter reason, hGH has been extensively engineered by early workers to improve binding and other properties. We are particularly interested in E174 which belongs to the hGH zinc-binding triad; the substitution E174A is known to significantly increase binding, but to now no explanation has been offered.
