A Retrospective Analysis of 190 Patients With Scoliosis Referred to a Private Australian Clinical Advisory Service Between 2017 and 2020.

Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with scoliosis from Australian primary care practices.

Methods: A retrospective review of 190 patient records from August 2017 to April 2020 from a private Australian clinical advisory service database was performed. Deidentified demographic and clinical data were collated and analyzed, along with information regarding the referring practitioners and any accompanying clinical or paraclinical information.

Relations between daily stressful events, exertion, heart rate variability, and thoracolumbar fascia deformability: a case report.

Background: The posture of performance-oriented sport climbers adapts in a way that likely promotes the development of low back pain. The thoracolumbar fascia, while also contributing to performance, seems to be involved in that process. Furthermore, there has been evidence of the stiffening of the fascial structures in disorders associated with negative affectivity.

The use of respiratory patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in the management of COPD: Perceptions of Australian osteopaths.

Background: Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) are widely used to capture patients' perspectives of their health status and treatment outcomes and to enable practitioners to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. The aim of this study was to explore Australian osteopaths' perceptions of the use of respiratory PROMS in the management of chronic lung conditions.

Methods: This study drew on the social ecological model (SEM), which highlights the interdependence of contextual structures and processes.

Implicit bias training for police: Evaluating impacts on enforcement disparities.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to estimate the behavioral impacts of training police officers in implicit bias awareness and management.

Hypotheses: Training police in implicit bias reduces racial and ethnic disparities in stops, arrests, summonses, frisks, searches, and/or use of force.

Method: A cluster randomized controlled trial using the stepped wedge design was applied to 14,471 officers in the New York City Police Department, with a 1-day training delivered to clusters of police commands between May 2018 and April 2019 and outcomes measured with police records of individual events from April 2018 to May 2019.

Building an evidence base for osteopathy: Trials and tensions. A qualitative study of the experience of clinicians engaging in research.

Background: Engaging in clinical research includes confronting challenges about the uncertainty around outcomes and ramifications the results may have on practice. This is pertinent for osteopathy where little is known about the experiences of osteopaths involved in clinical trials. The aim of this study was to explore the lived experience of osteopaths who participated in a randomised controlled trial for infantile colic.

Objective: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) report to be especially prone to social emotions like shame and guilt. At the same time, these emotions seem to play an important role in BPD pathology. The present study aimed to deepen the knowledge about the processes behind shame and guilt in patients with BPD.

The Long-Term Benefit of Exercise With and Without Manual Therapy for Mild Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by decreasing exercise capacity and deteriorating quality of life (QoL). Recent evidence indicates that combining exercise with manual therapy (MT) delivers greater improvements in exercise capacity than exercise alone in moderate COPD. The aim of this study was to investigate whether this combination delivers similar results in mild COPD.

Development of a highly effective combination monoclonal antibody therapy against Herpes simplex virus.

Background: Infections with Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 or -2 usually present as mild chronic recurrent disease, however in rare cases can result in life-threatening conditions with a large spectrum of pathology. Monoclonal antibody therapy has great potential especially to treat infections with virus resistant to standard therapies. HDIT101, a humanized IgG targeting HSV-1/2 gB was previously investigated in phase 2 clinical trials.

Factors that influence the scope of practice of the chiropractic profession in Australia: a thematic analysis.

Scope of practice has been defined as the activities that an individual health care practitioner is allowed to undertake within a specific profession. The chiropractic profession in Australia does not currently have a documented scope of practice. Informed discussions around scope of practice are hampered by a paucity of literature in this area.

Methods: Mental state attribution was examined in 24 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (12 acute paranoid (APS) and 12 post-acute paranoid (PPS)) with regard to positive symptoms as well as matched healthy persons using a moving shapes paradigm.

Demonstrating Agreement between Radio and Fluorescence Measurements of the Depth of Maximum of Extensive Air Showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory.

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array.

Photoacoustic imaging for cutaneous melanoma assessment: a comprehensive review.

Significance: Cutaneous melanoma (CM) has a high morbidity and mortality rate, but it can be cured if the primary lesion is detected and treated at an early stage. Imaging techniques such as photoacoustic (PA) imaging (PAI) have been studied and implemented to aid in the detection and diagnosis of CM.

Aim: Provide an overview of different PAI systems and applications for the study of CM, including the determination of tumor depth/thickness, cancer-related angiogenesis, metastases to lymph nodes, circulating tumor cells (CTCs), virtual histology, and studies using exogenous contrast agents.

Osteopathy Referrals to and from General Practitioners: Secondary Analysis of Practitioner Characteristics from an Australian Practice-Based Research Network.

Australian osteopaths engage in multidisciplinary care and referrals with other health professionals, including general practitioners (GPs), for musculoskeletal care. This secondary analysis compared characteristics of Australian osteopaths who refer to, and receive referrals from, GPs with osteopaths who do not refer. The analysis was undertaken to identify pertinent characteristics that could contribute to greater engagement between Australian osteopaths and GPs.

Relapse in clinically stable adult patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder: evidence-based criteria derived by equipercentile linking and diagnostic test accuracy meta-analysis.

Background: There is no consensus on defining relapse in schizophrenia, and scale-derived criteria with unclear clinical relevance are widely used. We aimed to develop an evidence-based scale-derived set of criteria to define relapse in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.

Methods: We searched the Yale University Open Data Access (YODA) for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in clinically stable adults with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, and obtained individual participant data on Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Clinical Global Impression Severity (CGI-S), Personal and Social Performance (PSP), and Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (SOFAS).

Electron population dynamics in resonant non-linear x-ray absorption in nickel at a free-electron laser.

Free-electron lasers provide bright, ultrashort, and monochromatic x-ray pulses, enabling novel spectroscopic measurements not only with femtosecond temporal resolution: The high fluence of their x-ray pulses can also easily enter the regime of the non-linear x-ray-matter interaction. Entering this regime necessitates a rigorous analysis and reliable prediction of the relevant non-linear processes for future experiment designs. Here, we show non-linear changes in the -edge absorption of metallic nickel thin films, measured with fluences up to 60 J/cm.

Decreasing Goal Oxygen Saturations in Bronchiolitis Is Associated With Decreased Length of Stay.

Objectives: For patients hospitalized with bronchiolitis, many hospitals have implemented clinical practice guidelines to decrease variability in care. Our hospital updated its bronchiolitis clinical pathway by lowering goal oxygen saturation from 90% to 88%. We compared clinical outcomes before and after this change within the context of the pathway update.

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos.
