Purpose: Prolonged electroencephalographic monitoring has facilitated the detection of nonconvulsive seizures. Compressed displays of EEG frequency spectra (such as compressed spectral array, CSA) can facilitate interpretation of continuous EEG by allowing the reader to observe on a single screen patterns evolving over many minutes or hours.

Methods: Patients were identified retrospectively over a 4-year period as displaying a cycling pattern of seizures on CSA.

Patients with ovarian serous tumors of low malignant potential (LMP) are commonly found to have peritoneal implants. Less commonly, similar lesions are seen in lymph nodes, sometimes in association with endosalpingiosis. We compared these lesions to the coexisting ovarian LMP tumors to determine whether they are clonally related to the ovarian neoplasm.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (SLCT) comprise less than 1% of ovarian tumors. The nature of the Leydig cells has been a subject of controversy and it is unclear whether they are clonally related to the neoplasm or instead proliferate as a non-neoplastic response to the Sertoli-cell component. Twelve ovarian SLCT were identified and hematoxylin and eosin and unstained sections were prepared from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks.

Tissue transglutaminase (TG2) is involved in Ca(2+)-dependent aggregation and polymerization of proteins. We previously reported that TG2 mRNA is up-regulated in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) cells compared with normal ovarian epithelium. Here, we show overexpression of the TG2 protein in ovarian cancer cells and tumors and its secretion in ascites fluid and define its role in EOC.

From a series of 64 sequential Oxford (Biomet Orthopedics, Inc, Warsaw, phase 3 implants, two study groups were selected: 23 knees with unilateral surgery and a normal opposite side, and 21 knees with bilateral simultaneous surgery. Standing 3-foot radiographs were taken pre- and postoperatively to assess the femorotibial angle and the location of the mechanical axis of the limb in relation to the knee. Results in the unilateral group showed an average postoperative femorotibial angle of 4.

Student evaluations of teaching provide administrators an overall picture of the effectiveness of personnel and contribute data for promotion and merit decisions. These evaluations must be assessed for their relevance, validity, and reliability. This paper describes the development process and psychometric testing for clinical (n = 149) and didactic (n = 148) student evaluation of teaching forms for undergraduate and graduate courses in one college of nursing.

Most neoplastic scrotal masses ultimately prove to be germ cell tumours and are recognisable with routine haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections. The differential diagnosis may be focused, even before reviewing histological sections, by knowledge of patient age, medical history, tumour site (testicular vs paratesticular) and gross findings. Some cases may prove to be diagnostically challenging, including rare tumours, a common tumour with an unusual pattern, a metastatic tumour, or a neoplasm with features that mimic another tumour.

Abnormally strong functional linkage between cortical areas has been postulated to play a role in the pathogenesis of partial epilepsy. We explore the possibility that such linkages may be manifest in the interictal EEG apart from epileptiform disturbances or visually evident focal abnormalities. We analyzed samples of interictal intracranial EEG (ICEEG) recorded from subdural grids in nine patients with medically intractable partial epilepsy, measuring interelectrode synchrony using the mean phase coherence algorithm.

In the adult, platelets are derived from unipotential megakaryocyte colony-forming cells (Meg-CFCs) that arise from bipotential megakaryocyte/erythroid progenitors (MEPs). To better define the developmental origin of the megakaryocyte lineage, several aspects of megakaryopoiesis, including progenitors, maturing megakaryocytes, and circulating platelets, were examined in the murine embryo. We found that a majority of hemangioblast precursors during early gastrulation contains megakaryocyte potential.

Although the ability of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to detect epileptiform discharges noninvasively has long been known, only recently has it become a common tool in clinical settings. Whether MEG or electroencephalography (EEG) is superior has been controversial; MEG has a theoretic edge over EEG for precise localization, but EEG has many practical advantages. Experience has shown that they often provide different and complementary information.

SPARC (Secreted Protein, Acidic and Rich in Cysteine) is a matricellular glycoprotein that modulates cell proliferation, adhesion, migration, and extracellular matrix (ECM) production. In this report chaperone-like activity of SPARC was identified in a thermal aggregation assay in vitro. Ultraviolet circular dichroism (UVCD) spectroscopy determined that SPARC was stable at temperatures up to 50 degrees C.

Dysgerminoma is the most common malignant ovarian germ cell tumor and shares histological and immunophenotypical features with its testicular counterpart, seminoma. Chromosome 12p abnormalities are genetic hallmarks of testicular seminomas. Little is known about these genetic changes in dysgerminoma.

Although most testicular and paratesticular tumors can be recognized by their light microscopic features, some raise significant differential diagnostic questions. Immunohistochemical staining has proved of significant value in this situation. There is still a role for the traditional markers, including placental-like alkaline phosphatase and alpha-fetoprotein, but newer markers provide additional support and often have greater sensitivity and specificity for many diagnoses.

The clinical utility of immunohistochemistry in the diagnosis of tumors of the urinary bladder is well established. With recent advances in molecular biology and novel technologies, several biomarkers have emerged as important adjuncts in the diagnosis of lesions of the bladder. When used in conjunction with careful histologic examination, immunohistochemistry can be a valuable aid in classifying adenocarcinoma presenting in the bladder and mesenchymal lesions of the bladder and in establishing the urothelial origin of a metastatic tumor.

Proper calibration of any instrument is vital to an investigator's ability to compare laboratory experiments, as well as to draw quantitative relations between experimental results and the real world. For the atomic force microscope, knowledge of quantities such as the probe spring constant, the piezoactuator voltage/height response, and the probe radius of curvature is necessary when transforming raw data into height, separation and force. These parameters are also prerequisites when applying mathematical models to the collected data.
